DURHAM, N.C.?The Duke University men's lacrosse team closes out its regular season home schedule this weekend, hosting Army on April 18. The Blue Devils and Black Knights face off at 2:30 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium. The game will be televised live by CBS College Sports Television, formerly known as CSTV.
Fans can purchase tickets for $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. Those unable to make it out to the game can watch the broadcast on CBS College Sports or follow the stats live online. A link is provided at www.GoDuke.com.
The contest will be the final regular season home game for the six fifth-year seniors. Jay Jennison, Chris Loftus, Kevin Mayer, Ryan McFadyen, Brad Ross and Rob Schroeder have helped Duke to a 77-13 record since the 2005 season. Included in that span are a national runner-up finish in 2007, a pair of appearances in the national semifinals (2007 and 2008), two ACC Tournament titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Duke and Army are meeting for the 13th time in the programs' histories. The Black Knights lead the series 8-4 after winning each of the first seven meetings. Duke has taken four of the past five games, including a 10-6 win in 2008 in Manhassett, N.Y. The two teams first met in 1946, renewed the rivalry in 2000 and have played four of the past five seasons. Army's last win over the Blue Devils was a 13-7 triumph on May 7, 2004 in West Point.
Duke heads into this weekend's contest after upsetting top-ranked Virginia 15-10 in the ACC regular season finale. The Blue Devils are winners of seven of their last eight contests and are ranked eighth in the most recent USILA coaches poll with a 9-3 overall on the year.
Senior Ned Crotty paces the offense with a career-best 49 points, including a nation's best 36 assists. Junior attackman Max Quinzani is second on the team in scoring with 38 points overall and a league-best 33 goals. Sophomore Zach Howell is on a tear of late, scoring nine points over the past two games to move his total to 24 on the season. Redshirt freshman Justin Turri rounds out the 20-point scorers with 22 on the year (13-9).
Defensively, Duke has been outstanding in the past eight games. Duke is allowing just 8.00 goals per game and only 7.62 in the past eight games. It held Virginia to a season-low three goals in the first half this past weekend. Senior Sam Payton holds down the faceoff duties, winning 110-of-197 restarts and picking up a team-best 68 ground balls. In goal, Schroeder is 9-3 overall with a 7.93 goals against average and a .495 save percentage.
Army comes to Durham with a 6-7 record after posting a 13-12 come-from-behind win over Lafayette on Tuesday. Three of Army's losses have come by one goal, with two of those being decided in double overtime. Jeremy Boltus leads all scorers with 44 points from 23 goals and 21 assists. Jason Peyer is right behind him with 43 points, including a team-high 30 goals. The Black Knights have seven players with double figure points on the year. As a team, Army is averaging 9.42 goals per game. Sean Reppard handles the faceoff duties and is 112-of-242 in restarts for a .463 win percentage. He also leads the team with 43 ground balls. Defensively, Army is allowing just 8.59 goals per game. In goal Tom Palesky is 6-7 overall with an 8.56 goals against average and a .607 save percentage.
Duke takes a break from regular season play next weekend for the ACC Tournament. The second-seeded Blue Devils take on third-seeded Virginia at 7:30 p.m., on April 24. The winner advances to the championship on April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
