CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - For the second straight Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) road contest, the 23rd-ranked Duke women's soccer team allowed two late goals on its way to fall, 2-0, at eighth-ranked Virginia on Thursday evening in Charlottesville, Va.
With the loss, the Blue Devils fell to 7-5-3 overall and 1-4-1 in ACC play, while the Cavaliers improved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-2-0.
"They turned the pressure up and a couple of seniors made some things happen at the end for them," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "It was tough. We just didn't respond. We gave the ball away -- we didn't hold it up front and we sprayed passes all over the place."
Duke continued its solid play to start off matches as the Blue Devils registered two corner kicks in the first four minutes and freshman Laura Weinberg attempted the first shot of the match that was saved by Cavalier goalkeeper Chantel Jones in the 18th minute. Virginia added a shot of its own before Duke freshman Kaitlyn Kerr fired a shot that went off the crossbar.
Blue Devil freshman Mollie Pathman added two more shots to close the first half that saw Virginia hold a 5-4 shot advantage.
Kerr came out to open the second half for Duke with a header that went wide and that went on to be the only shot attempt for the Blue Devils in the second stanza. The Cavaliers fired back with nine second half shots. Virginia struck in the 81st and 84th minutes as Meghan Lenczyk registered back-to-back goals to put the match out of reach.
For the game, Virginia outshot Duke, 14-5. Sophomore Tara Campbell collected five saves in 90 minutes, while Jones added one save. The Blue Devils were held to a season-low five shots with the previous low coming against second-ranked Stanford. Duke had been averaging 20 shots per match.
"I thought our backs played really well and I thought Tara played very well," said Church. "When you play a top 10 team on their home field, you have to play a full 90 minutes. We are just not quite there putting a full 90 minutes together. We are playing around 70 minutes and it is just not enough. You move on and go play Virginia Tech this weekend."
In the last road match at Miami, the Blue Devils allowed goals in the 88th and 89th minutes on their way to falling, 2-0.
"They pressured us well, stepped in front of balls, but we passed up at least four or five shots that we should of had -- nobody took responsibility," said Church on being held to a season-low five shots. "They are quick in the back and did a good job of getting in the passing lanes. We were not as sharp moving off the ball as we have been."
Duke will next travel to 25th-ranked Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 5:00 p.m.
