TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 16th-ranked Duke women's soccer team took an early 1-0 lead on Sunday at 10th-ranked Florida State but then allowed three unanswered goals to fall, 3-1, at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Blue Devils fell to 6-3-3 overall and 0-2-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action, while the Seminoles remain unbeaten in ACC play with a 3-0 mark and an overall record of 9-2-0. It marks the second straight match Duke has taken a 1-0 lead against a top 10 ranked ACC opponent, but has not been able to hold the lead.
"It is a disappointing match," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "It is a match we should have won. We did enough on the field to win that match. You have to be able to score goals. We created some great chances, but we didn't score any goals. To score one goal with that many opportunities -- you are not going to win matches in this league. So we have to go back to work and trying to score goals."
Duke got on the board just five minutes into the match off an own-goal by Florida State. At the 5:15 mark, freshman Mollie Pathman sent a shot at the goal that was then deflected by a Seminole defender and went in the goal to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 advantage.
Florida State went on to take two out of the next three shots and then got on the board in the 17th minute as Rachel Lim connected on her second goal of the season.
"It was fantastic to get the early goal, but to give up the tying goal 12 minutes later was very disappointing," said Church. "We made some mistakes defensively and like all good teams Florida State finished its opportunities. We created so many opportunities and chances, but we have to have some people that are hungry in the box."
The Blue Devils kept firing at the Seminole goal but couldn't get anything past FSU goalkeeper Kelsey Wys, who totaled seven first half saves.
Florida State nailed the go ahead goal in the 37th minute by Amanda DaCosta off an assist from Breezy Hupp. At the end of the first half, Duke held an 8-7 shot advantage with freshman Laura Weinberg attempting four shots and Pathman two.
Duke came out in the second half and took three out of the first four shots but all three attempts were saved by Wys. Florida State added an insurance goal in the 69th minute by Hupp to give the Seminoles a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils fired seven more shots over the final 21 minutes of play but couldn't get anything inside the posts. For the match, Duke held an 18-14 shot advantage led by six from Weinberg, who was playing in her home state of Florida for the first time in her collegiate career.
Duke allowed a season-high three goals in the match as sophomore goalkeeper Tara Campbell finished with four saves in 90 minutes of action. Wys collected 15 saves in the match for Florida State. Duke starters Nicole Lipp and Gilda Doria started the match but played less than 20 minutes before leaving with injuries.
The Blue Devils will return to the state of Florida this week as the Blue Devils will travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to face Miami on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
