DURHAM, N.C. - Becci Burling posted 12 kills on 24 attacks to lead Duke to a 3-0 win over N.C. Central in the first of Duke's two Saturday matches at the Duke Invitational in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Middle blockers Amanda Robertson and Chelsea Cook both turned in errorless performances in the day's opening match as the Blue Devils (8-1) extended their winning streak to eight striaght. Robertson finished 7-for-9 for a .778 hitting percentage while Cook played in all three games and finished a perfect 6-for-6.
Duke held N.C. Central to a -.062 hitting percentage, marking the seventh time this season that the Blue Devils held an opponent under .200 hitting. Robertson, Claire Smalzer and libero Ali McCurdy all helped out in the defensive effort as Robertson posted 10 digs, Smalzer posted nine and McCurdy collected eight.
Kellie Catanach and Alex Sall split setting duties for Duke as each posted 15 assists in the win. Sall saw over 50 percent of her sets go down for kills, while Catanach finished over 40 percent for eighth straight match.
In the opening game, Robertson went 4-for-6 with five digs and no attack errors as the Blue Devils won 25-15. N.C. Central hit into 11 attack errors and could not get past a Duke defense that featured two blocks from Burling and four digs from Smalzer. Duke used a 10-4 run midway through the match to build a 17-11 lead and held the Eagles to just three points for the remainder of the match.
Cook came up big for Duke in game two, going 4-for-4 with a pair of blocks to lead the Blue Devils to a 25-13 win. Cook earned a starting nod in set two and made the most of it, playing errorless volleyball as Duke hit .393 as a group with only two attack errors. The Eagles had trouble stopping Burling as well, as Duke's senior middle blocker went 6-for-8 in her second game. The Blue Devils posted four service aces in the game-two win, including one each from Burling, McCurdy, Megan Hendrickson and Alex Sall.
The Blue Devil defense closed out game three by holding the Eagles to a -.172 hitting percentage in the match-clinching 25-12 victory. N.C. Central managed only four kills while hitting into nine attack errors. Sall directed the offense with six assists and also dropped in two service aces as Duke clinched its eighth straight win.
Duke will take on No. 12 Minnesota this evening at 7 p.m. in the final match of the Duke Invitational.
