DURHAM, N.C. – Amanda Robertson posted her second career double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs to lead Duke past Wake Forest 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22) in the ACC opener on Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Robertson, a 6-3 junior, went 15-for-22 attacking for a .591 hitting percentage as the Blue Devils (9-2, 1-0 ACC) beat Wake Forest in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the seventh straight time. Robertson went 8-for-9 in the second game and hit over .400 for the third time in her last four matches.
Nearly matching Robertson's performance was fellow middle blocker Christiana Gray, who totaled 11 kills on 15 attacks for a .667 clip. Gray committed only one attack error and now leads the ACC with a .431 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils' .317 hitting percentage was a season high while the 55 kills were Duke's most in a three-game match since Nov. 23, 2007. Led by junior setter Kellie Catanach, who dished out 43 assists and was one dig shy of her own double-double, the Blue Devils had four attackers with at least seven kills, including Becci Burling and Sophia Dunworth who had nine apiece and Claire Smalzer who had seven.
Freshman libero Ali McCurdy continued to anchor Duke's defense, collecting 20 digs for the fifth time this season. With McCurdy guarding Duke's court, Wake forest hit just .136 for the match to become the eighth Blue Devil opponent to hit under .200 this season.
The Demon Deacons were led by Andrea Beck, who connected for eight kills and a .368 hitting percentage. Kadija Fornah, who ranked third in the ACC in kills entering the match, posted eight kills as well, but was held to a .029 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils came out swinging and hit .529 in the opening game. Of Duke's 21 kills, Robertson and Gray both had five on six attacks as the Blue Devils went 21-for-34 with only three attack errors. Catanach saw over 65 percent of her sets go down for kills and keyed an 8-2 run that put the Blue Devils on top 20-12. Catanach had four assists and one of her two kills during that rally as the Blue Devils cruised to a 25-16 victory.
Robertson went off for eight kills on nine errorless attacks in set two to lead the Blue Devils to a 25-15 victory. Wake Forest had no answer for the 6-3 junior or the rest of Duke's offense as the Blue Devils hit .368 with 18 kills and only four attack errors. Duke posted an early 15-3 lead with scoring streaks of seven straight and six straight points. The Blue Devil defense held the Demon Deacons to a .091 hitting percentage, thanks to eight digs from Burling and seven more from McCurdy.
Game three saw Gray turn in a perfect 4-for-4 performance as Duke clinched the match with a 25-22 victory. Sophomore Megan Hendrickson also got in on the action with her second kill of the match as the Blue Devils gutted out a narrow win against a rejuvenated Wake Forest defense. The Demon Deacons came out of the break and posted 4.5 blocks to hold Duke to .137 hitting, but still could not find a solution for the Duke defense.
Duke will embark on its first ACC road trip of the season next weekend as they head south to face Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga., on Friday, and Clemson in Clemson, S.C.
