BOONE, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21) at Appalachian State on Friday evening inside the Holmes Convocation Center to open the Mountaineer Classic.
The Blue Devils (3-7) and Mountaineers (8-2) were even at 15-15 in the fourth set and Duke trailed by just one at 18-17, but ASU took seven of the final 11 points to capture the match.
Freshman
Ashby Zubchevich led the way for the Blue Devils with a career-high 16 kills while
Taylor Williams was just behind with 15.
Mailinh Godschall paced the squad with 20 digs while
Nikki Quinn tallied a team-high 20 assists.
How It Happened
Set One – Duke 18, App State 25
- With neither team able to gain a lead of more than three points in the early going, the set was locked at 13-13. Duke tallied the next two points to go ahead 15-13 and led 16-14 before App State closed the set on an 11-2 run.
Set Two – Duke 18, App State 25
- The Mountaineers pulled away early in the set with a 5-0 run to break a 4-4 tie. A service error halted the string and made it a 9-5 lead, but App State captured the next four points to take a commanding 13-5 advantage. Duke did not tally more than two consecutive points the rest of the way as ASU closed out a 2-0 match lead.
Set Three – Duke 25, App State 22
- The Blue Devils bounced back in the third set. After ties of 3-3, 7-7 and 9-9, Duke jumped ahead 16-11 backed by three kills and a block assist from Ngozi Iloh. Duke led 22-17 and 24-19 before the Mountaineers made it interesting with three consecutive points to trim the Blue Devil lead to 24-22. Iloh had the answer again with a set-clinching kill.
Set Four – Duke 21, App State 25
- The two sides matched each other nearly point for point with App State clinging to an 18-17 advantage. A three-point run made it a 21-17 advantage for the Mountaineers. Trailing 22-18, the Blue Devils had a three-point string of their own to trail just 22-21 and force an ASU time out. A final three-point stretch, this one by App State, closed the set and match.

- The Blue Devils drop to a 3-7 overall record, while the Mountaineers improve to an 8-2 ledger.
- Duke drops to a 0-3 road record.
- The Blue Devils see their all-time series lead trimmed to 21-9.
- Charlotte Glass recorded her 200th career assist. She finished with 11 to move her career total to 210 assists.
- Millie Muir crossed the 100-assist plateau for the season with her 12 in the contest increasing her year's total to 104.
- Mailinh Godschall reached 50 assists this season with her three in the match.
- Zoë Gillen-Malveaux carded three block assists to give her three or more in eight matches this season.
- Taylor Williams booked 15 kills to reach double digits for the seventh time this season.
