FRANKLIN, Tenn. – In the first two tournaments of the fall, Duke University women's golfer
Lindy Duncan has carded two top 10 finishes as the sophomore placed tied for ninth on Sunday at the 2010 Mason Rudolph Women's Championship, which was played at the 6,281-yard, par 72 Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Duncan, who is a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., carded her second three-under-par, 69, of the tournament to finish with a 54-hole total of 211, which was five-under-par. The three-day score of 211 matches a career-best for the reigning ACC Player of the Year.
“Lindy has her mind right,” said Duke Head Coach
Dan Brooks. “Even when she is not hitting the ball great she is managing a score. I don't think she is been feeling it -- it has not been easy golf but she is still managing a score. That is what we have to get everybody to be able to do.”
On Sunday, Duncan registered four birdies and only one blemish on her scorecard as she hit 13 greens, 13 fairways and had 30 putts. Out of six rounds in 2010, she has posted four under-par ledgers.
Taking the individual title was Pia Halbig of California with a 13-under-par, 203, while Michelle Shin of Wake Forest (206) and Cydney Clanton of Auburn (208) were second and third, respectively.
As a team, Duke turned in a final round of 292 to place tied for 10th along with Florida with a 54-hole total of 872. The Blue Devils had rounds of 283, 297 and 292 over the three days of competition. LSU took home the team title with a 21-under-par, 843. Purdue, Southern California (851), UCLA (851), California (854), Alabama (859), Georgia (862), Vanderbilt (862), Wake Forest (867), Florida (872) and Duke (872) rounded out the top 10.
“Well anytime you finish 29 shots out of the lead score we are not going to be to excited about that,” said Brooks. “Obviously, a lot of players were able to stay under par for the bulk of the tournament and we were not able to do that. I am not real happy about this. We are a team that is going to continue to work hard and make ourselves better. It is real early in the season so we will stay after it.”
Keeping up her solid play in the final round was senior
Kim Donovan, who turned in a career-best 54-hole total of 215. She had rounds of 69, 73 and 73 over the three days. On Sunday, Donovan started slow with three bogeys over her first four holes but regained control and played her final 14 holes at two-under-par. She placed tied for 23rd overall in the tournament as she hit 11 greens, 13 fairways and had 29 putts.
Freshman
Alejandra Cangrejo collected her best round of the tournament with a one-over-par, 73, in the final round to place tied 62nd with a 225. Cangrejo, a native of Bogota, Columbia, had two birdies over her first three holes and two birdies during her final four holes on her way to finishing with a 73.
Fellow freshman
Laetitia Beck signed for her second consecutive round of 77 on Sunday, after opening the tournament with a three-under-par, 69. Beck, who is from Caesarea, Israel, managed one birdie on Sunday, which came on her ninth hole -- the 464-yard, par five No. 18.
Blue Devil sophomore
Courtney Ellenbogen struggled with an 82 on Sunday to finish 84th overall with a 234. Playing as an individual, sophomore
Stacey Kim also posted an 82 in the final round to finish tied for 85th.
Duke will next compete in the Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 8-10 at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
