WILMINGTON, N.C. - Duke University sophomore women's golfer Alejandra Cangrejo turned in a career-best tied for second place finish at the Landfall Tradition on Sunday as she carded a season-best round of two-under-par, 70, at the 6,208-yard, par 72 Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Colombia, posted rounds of 75, 76 and 70 over the three days and finished with a 54-hole total of 221. Taking the individual title was Purdue's Paula Reto with a 218, while Cangrejo was tied for second along with Auburn's Victoria Trapani.
After bogeying the first two holes to start her round on Sunday, Cangrejo settled down and registered birdies on the third, fifth and seventh holes to move to one-under-par. After a bogey on the 10th hole dropped her to even par, Cangrejo played the final eight holes at two-under-par with birdies on the 14th and 17th holes. The five birdies in the round is a season high.
Cangrejo's previous best finish in a tournament was tied for 15th at the Liz Murphey Collegiate last spring. On the day, she hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had a team-best 27 putts.
As a team, Duke finished seventh with rounds of 314, 303 and 307 for a total of 924. Purdue won the team title with a 904, while Auburn (918), Ohio State (919), South Carolina (922), Iowa State (923), Michigan State (923), Duke (924), N.C. State (932) and North Carolina (932) rounding out the top eight.
Both Laetitia Beck and Stacey Kim each collected rounds of 78 on Sunday on their way to placing tied for 16th and tied for 39th overall, respectively. Beck, who is from Caesarea, Israel, played the first seven holes at even par but struggled the rest of the way finishing with zero bogeys. She had a three-day total of 230, while hitting 10 greens, eight fairways and rolling 33 putts on Sunday. A product of Columbus, Ga., Kim had two birdies on the day as she hit 13 fairways, nine greens and had 33 putts.
Courtney Ellenbogen finished the weekend tied for 45th, while Irene Jung was 88th.
Duke concludes fall action this weekend and will next compete in the on Feb. 13-15, 2012 at the Northrop Grumman Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
