ATLANTA, Ga. - The Duke women set a new best for themselves, breaking a record-high five school records in the second day of the ACC Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
On the diving end, Abby Johnston and Nick McCrory took first on both sides, breaking both their own school and ACC records set last year in the event. Johnston took first on the one-meter with a score of 361.85, topping last year's score by more than three points, and posting back-to-back wins in the event. McCrory posted a score of 475.80 on the three-meter board, besting his second place finish from last year.
"The diving was absolutely tremendous," said head coach Dan Colella. "Drew Johansen has just done an absolutely terrific job with these guys, so it was just a great first day all-around."
It was Virginia who pulled away to a steady lead on Thursday, but after a slow showing in the preliminaries, the Blue Devils pulled through the finals in top spots.
In the three individual swimming events, the Blue Devils broke all three of the school records. Senior Ashley Twichell opened Thursday's finals by finishing ninth in the 500 free (4:42.69), shaving five seconds from her preliminary time that morning, and broke her own school record by two seconds.
Freshman Christine Wixted posted a season-best time for herself in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.37. The time also broke the Duke school record set by Katie Ness in 2004. And in a second freshman performance, Lauren Weaver broke the 50 free record in her preliminary with a time of 23.32.
"We had a bit of a rough start this morning," said Colella. "We we're a little bit tight in our performances. Tonight was just a great night for us. I think it really turned us around in terms of preparedness for the next two days."
