BLACKSBURG, Va. – Day one of the ACC championships have come to a close with the women's pentathlon and the first part of the men's heptathlon.
Freshman Miray Seward, in her first career pentathlon, finished ninth, just out of scoring position with a score of 3280. Seward picked up the most points in the 60 meter dash. Her time of 9.27 netted her 854 points while her best finish among the field was in the high jump. Her mark of 5'2.5” was good for a sixth place.
Curtis Beach, the world record holder in the 1,000 meters in the heptathlon, finished up the first day of competition sitting in third place, behind Miller Moss of Clemson and Rene Stauss of Virginia Tech, with 3144 points. His day one total is 57 points ahead of his mark from last years ACC Championships.
A 7.07 60 meter dash and 24'1.5” long jump, the third best leap in Duke history, put him in first after two events before Moss and Stauss picked up points in the shot put and high jump. The competition will conclude tomorrow with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.
The rest of Duke's track and field team will get into the action with the men's high jump kicking off at noon.
