GREENSBORO, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's golf team got off to a slow start on Friday to open the 2011 Bryan National Collegiate and is sixth after 18 holes of action at the 6,386-yard, Par 72 Bryan Park Champions Course.
As a team, Duke turned in a 13-over-par, 301, and is 13 shots behind first round leader Tennessee, who turned in an even-par, 288. Wake Forest (294), North Carolina (295), Virginia (296), Vanderbilt (299), Duke (301), Louisville (303), Washington (304), South Carolina (305) and Michigan State (305) rounded out the top 10.
After starting the day three-over-par through the first five holes, freshman Laetitia Beck closed the afternoon three-under-par over her final 13 holes. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck notched birdies on No. 6, No. 11, No. 15 and No. 17 during that stellar stretch. Beck had 32 putts, while hitting 11 fairways and 13 greens in round one. She enters the second round tied for tied fourth with an even-par, 72.
Leading the individual action are Eric Popson of Tennessee and Michelle Shin of Wake Forest with a two-under-par, 70. Laura Anderson of Louisville is third with a one-under-par, 71.
Senior Kim Donovan opened with Duke's best start of the day as she was even through 11 holes but suffered bogeys on the 12th, 14th and 17th holes before closing with a birdie on No. 18. On the 410-yard, par four 18th, Donovan drained a 15-foot putt for birdie. She hit 13 fairways, 14 greens and had 34 putts on the day as she finished with a 74, which is tied for 15th.
Coming off the first victory of her sophomore campaign, Lindy Duncan had one of the worst opening nine holes of her career as she was five-over-par. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan collected nine straight pars on the back nine to finish the day at five-over-par, 77. She is tied for 42nd through 18 holes. Duncan hit 10 greens, eight fairways and had 32 putts.
Both freshman Alejandra Cangrejo and sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen each turned in rounds of six-over-par, 78, and are tied for 51st. Playing as an individual, sophomore Stacey Kim posted an 80.
