Cangrejo Opens Tied First at Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

ATHENS, Ga. - Led by a first round two-under-par, 70, by freshman Alejandra Cangrejo, the fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in tied for third place at the 6,335-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course.

Taking the team lead through 18 holes was Purdue (284), while Alabama (286), Duke (291), Georgia (291), Florida State (293), Arkansas (294), Auburn (294), Virginia (294), Wake Forest (294), Kennesaw State (295) and Oklahoma (295) rounded out the top 10.

Cangrejo registered a team-best seven birdies on the day and moved to four-under-par through eight holes but closed with three bogeys over her final five holes to finish with a 70. She is tied with Hannah Thomson of Florida State for the individual lead.

Freshman Laetitia Beck collected a two-over-par, 74, on Friday and is tied for 12th. She notched 16 pars and two bogeys on the day. Both Lindy Duncan and Stacey Kim each turned in rounds of 77 on Friday and are tied for 42nd, while sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen is tied for 102nd with an 82.

Scoring for the tournament is different than normal as all five competitors from each school are playing together, which is designed to promote a better "team" atmosphere. A team's score for each hole is determined by the low four scores on that hole. The individual champion is still determined as the player with the best relation-to-par score over the 54 holes.

As a team, the Blue Devils carded seven birdies with Cangrejo posting seven and Duncan registering three. Senior Kim Donovan missed the tournament due to the flu. The Blue Devils will tee off on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with a shotgun start followed by Sunday's final round.
