CARY, N.C. - On the final day of the Duke Fab-4 Invitational, the inclement weather that forced matches indoors and slowed match play was a complete non-factor. The sun was out and the temperature reached into the mid-70's as players finished their matches for the weekend.
The lone singles champion of the weekend for the Blue Devils was No. 49 Chris Mengel, who stymied No. 90 Stijn Meulemens of Radford, 6-1, 6-0 in the black bracket finals. Jason Tahir completed the weekend with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 victory over Alabama's Ricky Doverspike to claim fifth place in the black bracket.
In the blue bracket, Luke Marchese fell 6-3, 6-3 to Kentucky's Anthony Rossi in the championship match. In the third place match, junior and fourth-ranked Henrique Cunha got back on track after falling to Rossi in the semifinals on Saturday, by defeating Alabama's Jarryd Botha, 6-4, 7-5.
On the consolation side of the blue bracket, Cale Hammond defeated Radford's Thomas Dehaen 7-6 (9), 6-4 in the third place match.
In the white bracket, No. 93 Fred Saba finished in second place after he was downed by No. 25 ranked Luka Somen from Virginia Tech, 7-5, 6-3 in the championship match. Freshman Raphael Hemmeler finished in seventh place in the bracket after South Carolina's Carl Eguez withdrew.
Only one duo of Blue Devils made it to the finals in their doubles bracket, as Saba and Hemmeler teamed up to defeat Louisville's Sebastian Sitefelmeyer and Andrew Carter, 8-3, and claim the B2 doubles bracket championship.
The only doubles matches that were played were the three championship matches, as the others were cancelled for timing reasons.
The Blue Devils will resume their fall campaign Oct. 1-5 when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the ITA All-American Qualifying Rounds.
