PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Duke men's fencing
team opened the 2012 season going 4-2 at the Philadelphia Invitational thanks
to a 5-1 showing from the epee squad.
Duke dominated in all four victories, defeating Johns Hopkins 23-4, Haverford
25-2, NJIT 25-2 and Drew 22-5. The Blue Devils' two losses were narrow defeats
at the hands of No. 7 Penn 14-13 and No. 10 Sacred Heart 16-11.
Sophomore Dylan Nollner led an experienced Blue Devils epee group with a 16-2
record which was the best performance of the day for the Duke men. Nollner and
epee teammate Jonathan Parker both went 3-0 against the seventh-ranked Penn
epees to lead the Blue Devils to a 6-3 victory in that bout, but the Quakers
responded by winning the saber showdown 6-3 and the foil matchup 5-4.
Duke's foil and saber squads both posted 4-2 records with their only losses
coming to top-10 opponents Sacred Heart and Penn. Freshman Rod Shayesteh paced
the foils with a 15-3 record, while fellow foil Chris Sullivan turned in a 14-4
performance.
Junior Anthony Lin - a two-time NCAA qualifier - went 15-3 on the day to lead
the sabers. Eugene Chung followed Lin with a 14-4 record, and Timothy Evans
rounded out the squad with at 13-5 day.
