OAK RIDGE, TENN. - The Duke University rowing team concluded the Cardinal Oak Ridge Invitational on Sunday on Melton Lake with No. 1 ranked Virginia topping all five races.
The novice eight crew started the action for the Blue Devils but could not outlast Kansas and No. 1 ranked Virginia. The Cavaliers took an open water lead to claim first place with a time of 6:36.80 finishing 12 seconds ahead of Kanas (6:47.58) and 18 seconds ahead of Duke (6:54.82).
In the second varsity four, Duke took on Minnesota and Virginia. The Cavaliers posted a time of 7:17.70 with Minnesota (7:25.89) in second. Duke crossed at 7:45.15 to come in third.
The second varsity eight race was a close battle with Virginia (6:32.40) edging out Minnesota by 1.44 seconds for first. Duke recorded a time of 6.50.04 to finish third.
Duke's varsity four crew posted a time of 7:26.33 to finish in third behind Minnesota (7:13.75) and Virginia (7.06.80).
The varsity eight boat concluded the day for the Blue Devils with the best finish of the day. The crew of Caroline Kiritsy, Kathy Smithwick, Katie Burke, Emily Theys, Rory Erickson-Kulas, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy and Claire Vannelli finished with a time of 6:22.79 coming eight seconds behind No. 1 ranked Virginia. Minnesota (6:24.39) finished two seconds behind the Blue Devils to finish in third.
Overall, the varsity eight finished second or better in every race for the weekend.
Duke will have an open weekend to prepare for the San Diego Crew Classic on March 31-April 1 in San Diego, Calif.
