CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Blue Devils started strong on Day one of the 2012 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with Carly Seymour earning a bronze medal to close out the evening.
The day began with the men's decathlon, where 2012 NCAA indoor track and field heptathlon champion junior Curtis Beach currently leads the field with 4,060 points after five events. The Albuquerque, N.M., native finished first in three out of five events including the 100 meters , long jump, and the 400 meters. He set a personal record in the long jump with a mark of 24-9.75(7.56) which moves him up to second on Duke's all-time list.
Also in the decathlon, freshman Ian rock finished with 3,531 points to put him in sixth place while fellow freshman Terrence Neal finished barely broke the 3,000 mark with 3,002 and tenth place overall. Rock earned a personal record in the shot put with a mark of 36-2.0(11.02).
"It was good overall day for us," Director of Track and Field Norm Ogilvie commented. "It was a successful decathlon today for Ian Rock and Curtis had a little setback in the high jump but came roaring back in the 400."
After four events in the women's heptathlon, freshman Teddi Maslowski finished the day in fourth with a point total of 2,959 points while sophomore Miray Seward collected 2,932 points to put her in fifth place.
Maslowski's best finishes of the day include a collegiate personal record and third place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.45 and a third place finish in the 200 meter dash by completing the distance in 24.96. Seward earned personal records in the 200 meter dash by running a 26.65 and the shot put with a final mark of 11.21(36-9.5). The duo will conclude competition tomorrow with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meter run.
In the throws, sophomore Michelle Anumba earned the first points for the women's squad by earning a fourth place finish in the hammer throw. Her mark of 183-02(55.82) earned five points for the Blue Devils. The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native will compete in the women's shot put Friday at 3 p.m.
Sophomore Austin Carpenter was Duke's top finisher in the men's javelin throw with a personal record mark of 211-09(64.54) which was good enough for fourth place. He was closely followed by freshman Thomas Lang who finished 5th by earning a mark of 203-01(61.91) while fellow freshman Zachary Robertshaw threw a mark of 184-01 and narrowly missed scoring by finishing in ninth place.
"We had a great moment with Austin Carpenter stepped up and threw a huge pr to finish fourth. Tommy Lang also had a solid performance to finish fifth and score us a total of nine points in the javelin."
The evening closed with the men's and women's 10,000 meters. On the men's side senior Andrew Brodeur ran a personal record time of 29:39.00 to finish in fourth place and puts him in a tie for fourth on Duke's all-time list. He was followed by sophomore Brian Atkinson who also earned a personal record with the a time of 30:25.20 which was good enough for 12th place.
On the women's side, senior Carly Seymour led the Blue Devils with a third place finish a time of 33:55.53. Junior Juliet Bottorff finished in sixth place with a time of 34:07.30 while Megan Deakins finished in seventh with a time of 34:11.35 in her first 10,000 meter race.
After one day of competition, Duke's women's team sits in second with 16 points while the men sit in fourth with 14 points.
"Real good first day and we are positioned to cash in with more points tomorrow in the multi events and we are looking forward to the rest of the meet."
