CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After day one of the Tobacco Road Cup, junior Robert Rohner, competing unattached as he redshirts the 2015 indoor season, sits atop the men's heptathlon standings with 3,000 points. With four events down and three to go, senior Ian Rock holds the third spot, currently with 2,783 points, while freshman Tanner Johnson is in fourth with 2,780 points.
Starting the day with the 60m dash, Rohner took an early lead over the competition. The Sumter, N.C., native ran a 6.99 to finish first, while teammates Rock and Johnson each ran a 7.37, tying for fourth.
In the long jump, the Blue Devils captured the top three spots. Rohner extended his lead with another first-place performance, registering a mark of 22-8.50 (6.92). Rock, hailing from Davis, Calif., turned in the second-best performance from the field, jumping 22-5.00 (6.83), and Johnson placed third with a leap of 21-10.25 (6.66) for 734 points.
Rohner added a top-three finish in the shot put, tossing the implement 44-0.00 (13.41). Johnson recorded a mark of 38-3.50 (11.67) to finish sixth, followed by Rock's throw of 37-8.25 (11.49) to take eighth.
In the final event of the day, Johnson tied for the top mark in the high jump. The freshman from Boise, Idaho, cleared 6-2.50 (1.89) while Rock and Rohner finished third and fifth, respectively, with jumps of 6-1.25 (1.86) and 5-10.75 (1.80).
Friday's session, the final day of the Tobacco Road Cup, will feature the last three events of the men's heptathlon and all five events of the women's pentathlon, with redshirt juniors Karli Johonnot and Teddi Maslowski in action for the women. Competition in Chapel Hill will start at 3:30 p.m.
