DURHAM, N.C.—Fresh off of a strong start to the 2015-16 season at the Hokie Open, the Duke wrestling team has climbed into the InterMat top 25 poll at the No. 25 spot. The Blue Devils grabbed three titles and seven top-six finishes overall this past weekend.
Individually, two Blue Devils are in the InterMat top 25 with Conner Hartmann topping the list at No. 3 at 197 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Jake Faust earned his first top 25 nod, coming in at No. 17 in this week's poll at 157.
The top 25 ranking is the first for the Blue Devils under head coach Glen Lanham and likely the first appearance in the InterMat poll in program history.
In addition to being ranked 25th by InterMat, the Blue Devils came in at 18th in the FloWrestling poll after being unranked heading into the season. Hartmann remains at No. 3 according to FloWrestling, while Faust jumped all the way to sixth after upsetting two-time Pac 12 Champion Jim Wilson of Stanford last weekend.
Hartmann cruised through his bracket at the Hokie Open en route to his second consecutive title. He allowed just two points in his matches in which he recorded a fall, a technical fall and a 10-2 major decision. Two of his wins came over ranked opponents, including Jared Haught of Virginia Tech.
Faust, Duke's starter at 165 pounds in seven duals last season, got off to an excellent start at the Hokie Open with a top finish. The Lexington, Ohio native had little trouble getting through the early matches before going up against No. 4 Jim Wilson in the title match. The trend continued for Faust as he beat the returning All-American 6-2.
Duke will take this weekend off before hitting the mats again at the Wolfpack Open Nov. 22. The Blue Devils open dual action Dec. 15 at Appalachian State.
