DURHAM, N.C. – Rightside hitter Alyse Whitaker totaled 11 kills while middle blocker Jordan Tucker added 10 in Duke's 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) victory over NC State Wednesday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Whitaker committed just one attack error on 20 swings to register a .500 hitting percentage. She was also key to Duke's (16-13, 11-8 ACC) defense at the net, adding four blocks.
Tucker's 10 kills came on a .304 hitting percentage as the Prairie Village, Kan., native recorded her 15th match in double-digit kills this season. Fellow middle blocker Leah Meyer contributed nine kills and a match-high five blocks.
Setter Maggie Deichmeister dished out 40 assists, notching her 15th match of the season with 40-plus assists. Libero Sasha Karelov picked up a match-high 28 digs, marking her 11th contest with over 20 digs.
“Really glad we were able to get it done today in three,” said Jolene Nagel. “It wasn't necessarily smooth sailing all the way because NC State does a great job of using the block and just being aggressive both offensively and defensively. We did a good job of adjusting . We were able to pick up some more balls defensively. We also served very well.”
Duke countered an early NC State run to start the match with a 7-2 stretch of its own to stake a 17-12 advantage. The back-and-forth action continued with a 8-3 Wolfpack spurt. Tied at 20-20, Duke received an Emily Sklar kill and an NC State attack error. The two teams traded points the remainder of the set with Duke using two Meyer kills and a Tucker tally to close out the 25-23 decision.
The second set mirrored the first as Duke built a six-point lead at 18-12 before NC State clawed its way back. A Julia Brown kill, one of 13 for the match, knotted the score at 21-all. The two squads traded blows before landing at 23-23 following a Perry Ramsey kill. The Blue Devils were once again able to put a run together late, winning the final two points on a Sklar kill and Meyer/Whitaker block.
Duke trailed 17-15 in the third before rallying with a 10-4 run to secure the 25-21 win. Meyer and Tucker contributed two kills each down the stretch and Whitaker finished off the match with her 11th kill.
The Blue Devils wrap up the regular season Saturday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m., hosting the 22nd-ranked Tar Heels in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
