BALTIMORE – The Duke fencing team featured four epeeists during Saturday's Division I Men's Epee competition at the December North American Cup (NAC), highlighted by freshman Bryn Hammarberg placing 34th out of 226 competitors.
In his final tune-up competition before beginning his first collegiate campaign, Hammarberg proved he was in mid-season form with a perfect 6-0 mark during pool play to go with a +15 indicator. With the No. 8 overall seed and a first-round bye, the rookie out of Maplewood, N.J., picked up a hard-fought 15-13 victory in the round of 128 before falling in the round of 64 to end his run.
Also fencing in Division I Men's Epee for the Blue Devils were senior Ted Cho and sophomores Alec Ajnsztajn and Dakota Nollner. Ajnsztajn finished the day 70th overall, sparked by a 5-1 performance in pool play. Seeded 23rd in the elimination rounds, Ajnsztajn used a first-round bye to advance to the round of 128 before dropping a 15-9 decision. Rounding out the day for the Duke epeeists were Nollner and Cho placing 161st and 184th, respectively.
The Blue Devils will be represented by junior Alexander Merriman in Division II Men's Foil Sunday at 1 p.m.
