BANDON, ORE. – The Duke men's golf team earned a share of the Bandon Dunes Championship title with a one-under 575 after Sunday's final round was cancelled due to strong winds and rain. Sophomore
Alexander Matlari paced the Blue Devils with a three-under 141 to finish tied for third, while senior
Turner Southey-Gordon was tied for 11th with a one-under 143.
“I couldn't be more excited for the guys,” said head coach
Jamie Green. “It's been a little while since we notched a W. We played in some pretty challenging conditions the last two days. The themes were all about patience, focus, persistence and being positive. Those guys did that to a T. It was a total team effort. Certainly with Alex and Turner, who both played some pretty key roles with consistency over the two rounds.”
Duke and Missouri fired matching rounds of 285-290 to split the tournament championship with St. Mary's (577), Colorado (579) and Washington State (579) rounding out the top five. Cody Blick (San Jose State) claimed individual medalist honors with a six-under 138, one shot better than Michael Anderson (Washington State).
Matlari's tie for third was the best finish of his career and his first top 20 finish of the season. He led the tournament in par 4 scoring at three-under and was also tied for the tournament lead with nine birdies. He opened play Friday with a one-over 73 before carding a second day low-round of 68 (-4).
Southey-Gordon collected his seventh career top 20 finish on the strength of rounds of 71 and 72. He had eight birdies and an eagle over 36 holes of play and now has three rounds of even-par or better golf on the year.
Adam Wood (70-78),
Jake Shuman (75-73) and
Motin Yeung (71-77) each finished tied for 33rd with four-over 148s, while individuals
Max Greyserman (77-75) and
Andrew Bieber (71-83) tied for 59th and 68th, respectively.
Green has now led the Blue Devils to 11 tournament titles.
Duke returns to action Sunday, March 22 with the Blue Devil Shootout at the Duke University Golf Club.
