DURHAM, N.C.—Duke sophomore attackman Jack Bruckner has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Danny Fowler is the Defensive Player of the Week after they helped lead the Blue Devils to a 15-8 victory over No. 6 Virginia over the weekend.
The win clinched a spot for the Blue Devils in the upcoming ACC Tournament and bumped Duke to No. 6 in the most recent polls. Duke will play the winner of the North Carolina – Notre Dame set for this coming Saturday.
Bruckner tallied a career-high seven goals, including five in the first half, to lead Duke to the crucial ACC victory. The seven goals are the most by a Blue Devil since Zach Howell had seven in a win over Siena Feb. 12, 2011. The last time a Duke player scored at least seven goals in an ACC game was in 2008 when Max Quinzani netted seven in a 19-9 win over No. 3 Virginia in Charlottesville. Bruckner scored the first three goals for Duke and had five of the team's seven in the first half. The Belle Terre's, N.Y., native's previous career-high was four tallies.
In just his third career start between the pipes, Fowler made a career-high 18 saves to capture his first career ACC victory. The Cavaliers managed just three goals in the first two quarters as Fowler made 11 saves in that span. The eight goals allowed by the Blue Devils are the fewest since Duke held Loyola to eight March 1. Duke was allowing just over 16 goals per game in ACC play heading into Sunday's game and kept Virginia to just half that total. Fowler, a redshirt freshman, is averaging nearly 13 saves per game in his three starts.
The Blue Devils have a busy week ahead of them as they travel to Stony Brook Wednesday, April 15 and then to Marquette April 18. Both games will be televised live by CBS Sports Network.
The ACC Men's Lacrosse Championship will be played at PPL Park in Philadelphia April 24 and 26, with the top four finishers from the regular season competing in the tournament. The fifth-place team that does not qualify for the Championship will play Penn on Saturday, April 25 at PPL Park. Single game and all-session tickets are on sale now. Click here to purchase tickets.
