EUGENE, Ore. – The first day of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., featured two Blue Devils battling for national titles in their respective events. Redshirt junior Thomas Lang highlighted the day for Duke, finishing sixth in the men's javelin to secure first team All-America honors. With six of the 21 events scored for the men, Duke sits tied for 25th with three points.
Making his second consecutive appearance at the national meet, Lang kicked off the event by letting the javelin fly a school-record distance of 237-10 (72.50m) on his first attempt. The mark easily advanced Lang to finals, ranking him fourth after the first three rounds of throws. After falling to sixth, the native of Royersford, Pa., gave a valiant effort on his final throw in hopes of moving up the leaderboard, but came up just short of besting his previous distance. Final throws had been Lang's forte all season, winning the ACC title and qualifying for nationals with his last throw at each meet. Lang's sixth-place finish marks his first time earning first team All-America honors, after securing second team accolades in 2014 by placing 11th.
Competing for the first time in her career as an individual at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, redshirt junior Teddi Maslowski finished the first day of the women's heptathlon in 24th with 2,708 points. Maslowski started strong in the first event, ranking 11th with 1,034 points after running a 13.61 in the 100m hurdles, then followed that by clearing 5-1.75 (1.57m) in the high jump. Moving on to the shot put, the Burgettstown, Pa., product was unable to register a legal mark, fouling all three attempts, before capping the first day with a time of 24.08 in the 200m. Maslowski will return tomorrow for the final three events of the heptathlon, starting with the long jump at 3 p.m. (ET).
Competing with Maslowski Thursday, junior Megan Clark and freshman Madison Heath will vie for gold in the women's pole vault, slated to begin at 7:45 p.m. (ET).
