DURHAM, N.C. – Former Blue Devil standout and current Duke volunteer assistant coach Ashley Twichell has been selected to the 2015-16 USA Swimming National Team, earning a spot on the U.S. roster for the fifth consecutive year.
Twichell was named to the roster in the open water 10K after representing the U.S. in open water events at this summer's FINA World Aquatic Championships in Kazan, Russia. The 2011 Duke graduate placed sixth overall in the women's 5K race at the World Championships (59:10.0) and crossed the finish line ninth in the 25K event (5:20:20.8).
Her performances helped the U.S. capture the open water team title at the meet with the highest overall open water team score. The team title was the first for Team USA since 1991.
Earlier this year, Twichell was second in the 5K and third in the 10K at the 2015 Open Water National Championships. Her other accomplishments in open water swimming include claiming a gold medal in the 10K at the 2013 World University Games, helping the U.S. capture the inaugural 5K open water team pursuit title at the 2011 World Championships and being named the 2011 Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year by USA Swimming.
During her career at Duke, Twichell was an All-American and All-ACC champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She qualified for the NCAA Championship all four seasons and as a freshman was the first Blue Devil swimmer to compete at the national meet in four years. As a senior in 2011, Twichell guided the Duke women to a top-20 finish at NCAAs for the first time in school history, placing a career-best fifth in the mile. Also an Academic All-American, she remains the women's program record holder in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyle events.
