DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men's basketball fans caught their first glimpse of the 2016-17 squad during the program's eighth annual Countdown to Craziness presented by Delta Airlines event Saturday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"We're very pleased with tonight," said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I thought our guys played very hard. We have good talent, obviously, that made it look like a real game, rather than a Countdown to Craziness."
The Blue Devils took the court for the Blue/White scrimmage, consisting of one 20-minute period. Freshman Jayson Tatum led all players with 18 points, adding three rebounds and two assists to the well-rounded effort.
Veterans Grayson Allen and Amile Jefferson also had solid nights as Allen totaled 10 points and four assists, while Jefferson notched seven points and three boards.
Freshmen Marques Bolden, Javin DeLaurier, Frank Jackson, Jayson Tatum and Jack White made their Duke debuts in front of a packed Cameron.
The 20-minute period was highlighted by Tatum's layup with 16:46 remaining, sparking the White Team's run and eventual lead. Sophomore Luke Kennard contributed to the success, adding 11 points and three rebounds to the team's 52-37 victory.
The Blue Team was led by Jackson with 12 points and Bolden secured seven rebounds to go along with seven points to add to the team effort.
"Our kids love one another," Krzyzewski said. "You can tell they had a lot of fun tonight. They've been a pleasure to coach. We wish we could all be healthy, and we're looking forward to next Friday, when we start out playing our first exhibition game."
The Blue Devils also debuted the 2016-17 poster:
Duke opens exhibition play Friday Oct. 28, hosting Virginia State in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.Uncommon.
