BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fencing at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., 13 of Duke's 23 competing fencers qualified for the final round, including seven that notched top-10 finishes. Leading the way was sophomore Pascual Di Tella capturing second in the men's saber competition.
In the final pool, Di Tella logged a record of 8-3 and a +15 indicator to capture runner-up honors to record the highest finish at the event by a Blue Devil. It was also the top mark of his career, besting his seventh-place showing last season as a freshman.
For the women, freshman Kristen Coury paced the Duke contingent and continued her stellar rookie campaign with a seventh-place performance in the women's foil competition, going 6-5 and adding a -1 indicator in the final pool. Sophomore Haley Fisher and junior Julia Lee each followed close behind with matching eighth-place finishes in women's saber and women's epee, respectively. The spot for Fisher is one better than her ninth-place showing as a freshman last year, while Lee took sixth in the event during the 2015 season.
Other Blue Devils that finished in the top 10 were freshman Bryn Hammarberg (8th – men's epee), senior Charles Copti (9th – men's saber), sophomore Jan Maceczek (9th – men's foil) and sophomore Jennifer Ling (10th – women's saber). Rookie Claudia Wrampelmeier led the Duke women's epeeists, placing 12th overall.
The Blue Devils will finish the season at the NCAA Fencing Championships March 24-27 in Waltham, Mass., hosted by Brandeis. Qualifiers for the national meet will be announced next week.
