WALTHAM, Mass. – Through three rounds of pool play Thursday, senior captain Isabella Barna ranks third in women's epee at the NCAA Fencing Championships in Waltham, Mass. Duke, with three women fencing at the national meet, ranks 11th in the team standings with 19 points heading into Friday.
Columbia/Barnard leads the team competition with 64 points, followed by Notre Dame (54), Princeton (53), Ohio State (50) and St. John's (49) to round out the top five.
Barna, who placed 19th in women's epee at the 2015 NCAA Championships, kicked off the last meet of her final collegiate season in great form, winning 10 of her 15 bouts and logging a +11 indicator. The Bend, Ore., native trails Princeton's Charlene Liu and Penn State's Jessie Gottesman-Radanovich, who rank first and second with 12 and 11 victories, respectively.
In addition to Barna, sophomore saber Haley Fisher and freshman foilist Kristen Coury each currently hold the 20th spot in their respective weapons. Fisher, who placed 18th at the event in 2015, won five bouts with a -8 indicator, while Coury logged four victories to go with a -23 indicator.
With eight bouts remaining in each weapon's pool play, Barna, Fisher and Coury will attempt to move up the leaderboard in hopes of securing a top-four spot. The four fencers in each weapon with the best marks will advance to the semifinals of a single-elimination bracket of 15-touch bouts. The semifinal and championships bouts will be aired on ESPN3, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The men are slated to compete Saturday and Sunday.
