WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior Isabella Barna secured All-America honors to highlight Friday's action at the NCAA Fencing Championships for Duke, placing sixth in women's epee. With the women's events completed, the Blue Devils head into the men's half of the meet 12th in the team standings with 29 points.
Columbia/Barnard continues to lead the team race with 86 points, followed by Notre Dame (84), Princeton (82), Ohio State (76) and St. John's (74) closing out the top five.
Barna, who finished the first day in third with 10 victories, wrapped up the final eight pool play bouts Friday with three victories to cement her spot in sixth with 13 wins and a +11 indicator. The All-America finish was the first of Barna's career, with her lone other trip to nationals resulting in a 19th-place showing in 2015.
Each entering the day in 20th, sophomore Haley Fisher and freshman Kristen Coury both moved up two spots to place 18th in women's saber and women's foil, respectively. After winning just five of her 15 bouts Thursday, Fisher logged wins in four of her eight bouts Friday to finish with nine victories and a -14 indicator. The 18th-place finish matches her performance last season at the 2015 NCAA Championships as a freshman. Coury, who registered four wins Thursday, added three more victories Friday to tally seven bout wins and a -31 indicator overall.
With the women's portion of the NCAA Fencing Championships concluded, the men will take to the strips Saturday and Sunday to round out the collegiate season. Representing Duke will be senior Charles Copti and sophomore Pascual Di Tella in saber and freshman Bryn Hammarberg in epee. The men's epee competition is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., while the men's saber event is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
