BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In the second game of a home-and-home series against the Camels, Duke dropped a 5-1 road decision to Campbell Wednesday evening at Jim Perry Stadium. Duke (5-4) totaled 14 strikeouts and limited Campbell (4-4) to five hits, but the Camels strung three hits together in the fourth and benefitted from an uncharacteristic five walks issued by the Blue Devils.
“[We] hold a team to five hits, strike them out 14 times, and they have three errors … you anticipate that's a game that's probably going to go in your favor,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “Baseball's a funny sport that way; it didn't tonight.”
Campbell totaled five hits to Duke's four on the day. Freshman Zack Kone led the way with two hits for the Blue Devils, while junior Max Miller and freshman Jimmy Herron had a base hit each.
Duke left-handers James Ziemba and Nick Hendrix pitched well out of the bullpen, combining for four shutout innings while allowing just one hit.
“I thought James and Nick did a good job of keeping the game close and within striking distance but we just never put it together offensively,” Pollard added.
Duke shut out the Camels, 4-0, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park this past Tuesday, but it was the Camels who struck first in the rematch. Camel first baseman Jimmy Monaghan tripled to the right center gap and scampered home on a wild pitch to plate the game's first run in the bottom of the second.
In the bottom of the fourth, Campbell added three runs to extend its margin to 4-0. Monaghan and Justin Lamazarus singled back-to-back before Drew Butler knocked them in with an RBI double. Butler advanced to third on fly ball to right before crossing the plate on a Duke passed ball.
The Blue Devils got on the board to start the fifth. Consecutive singles from Max Miller and Jimmy Herron coupled with a wild pitch set the tables for an Evan Dougherty sacrifice fly.
Free bases came back to haunt Duke in the bottom half as Campbell plated a fifth run on a hit batter and three walks.
Making his first collegiate start, the Camels' Tyson Messer allowed one hit and struck out five over three innings to begin the ballgame. Campbell used four pitchers in total to slow the Duke offense
Next up, Duke hosts Toledo in a three-game series at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park Friday-Sunday, March 4-6.
