ATLANTA – Sophomore MaryEllen Targonski and freshman Mackenzie Willborn both advanced to the women's platform final Wednesday on the last day of competition at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships.
A Zones finalist on the platform a year ago, Targonski advanced once again with a 15th-place finish in preliminaries (227.40). She started off her finals list in strong fashion, receiving an award of 63.00 on her first dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault for a 2.8 degree of difficulty. The Gastonia, N.C., native surpassed the 50-point mark again in the second round and totaled 255.75 points to place ninth overall.
Willborn joined Targonski in the final after coming in 18th in preliminaries (220.15). She was also impressive in the opening rounds, earning over 50 points on each of her first two dives. The Blue Devil rookie rounded out her list with 235.95 points, giving her a combined total of 456.10 for the day. That put her 16th in the final standings.
Freshmen Evan Moretti and Josh Owsiany both competed in Wednesday morning's men's preliminaries on the platform, with Moretti taking 14th and Owsiany 21st. Moretti totaled 287.70 points on his list after earning an award of 59.40 on his second dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault for a 2.7 degree of difficulty. Owsiany finished with 264.70 points after topping the 50-point mark in two rounds.
Moretti will return to Atlanta in two weeks, having garnered NCAA qualification Monday in the 3-meter springboard competition. He will be joined by four Blue Devil swimmers, per Wednesday's announcement of the official invitation lists.
“Evan had an awesome meet,” said head diving coach Nunzio Esposto. “He just really stepped up to the plate and had a really good semi and a really good final. Competition was really tough, but I'm proud of how all of our divers did.”
