Duke Closes Regular Season with Ease
Deemer Class threw in five goals and the Blue Devils used an 11-1 run over a span of 26 minutes to score a 15-8 win at Boston University Sunday. Duke trailed 2-1 early in the second quarter, but tallied 11 of the game's next 12 goals to pull ahead by nine, 12-3.
Ian Yanulis netted his first career goal to make it 11-3 and Class had four goals and an assist in the run. Duke held the Terriers without a goal for 18:55 over the span of the third and fourth quarters. It marked the fifth time in the previous six games the Blue Devils have held their opponent to fewer than 10 goals. Duke did that just five times in the first 12 games of the year.

Class Continues Climb Up Charts
Deemer Class tallied five goals to push his season total to 49 for the year, leaving him one shy of becoming the ninth Blue Devil to reach 50 in a season. His 49 goals currently rank 13th in Duke single-season history and sixth among midfielders in NCAA history. With 198 career points, Class is two away from becoming the sixth Division I midfielder in NCAA history to reach the 200-points benchmark. Class would join
Myles Jones as they would be the second midfield duo to have 200 points apiece.
Second Midfield Contributions
Duke has struggled to generate points from the second midfield this season after injuries forced lineup changes. The past four games, Duke has settled on
Brad Smith,
Matthew Giampetroni and
Tripp Transou. In that stretch, the trio has combined for nine points. In the first 14 games of the year the second midfield had just 10 points. Smith has hit his stride in his rookie season with six points in the stretch.
Duke and Loyola Take Two
The Blue Devils and Greyhounds will face off for the second time in a couple months Saturday in the opening game of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Duke bested Loyola 15-6 during the regular season behind eight points from
Myles Jones.
Kyle Rowe was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 19-of-23 draws against Graham Savio. Since that meeting, Savio has improved at the X, winning nearly 60 percent of his draws (109-of-182). Rowe has been equally as strong, winning 62 percent of his restarts (143-of-232) since the March meeting. Duke is 2-0 in rematches with Loyola in the NCAA Tournament, winning in 2008 and 2013.
Danowski in Rematches
Head coach
John Danowski is 23-10 in rematches from regular season games during his eight seasons at Duke. He is 15-8 in rematches when the Blue Devils win the regular season contest. Duke is 1-1 in rematches this season with an ACC Championship win over Notre Dame and loss to Syracuse. In non-conference rematches, Duke is 7-2 with the two losses coming against Johns Hopkins. Duke is 2-0 in postseason rematches with Loyola. The Blue Devils also beat the Greyhounds in both of those regular season games.
