DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke rowing program continued its post-season award haul with Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Region 3 Staff of the Year recognition. Head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno, assistant coach/recruiting director Chuck Rodosky and assistant coach Chase Graham completed their first year with the Blue Devils by guiding the program to its first NCAA Championships appearance and a second-place finish at the ACC Championship.
The Staff of the Year award is intended to recognize a staff that fits one or more of the following criteria: outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
Cooke Carcagno was named the CRCA Region 3 Coach of the Year as well as ACC Coach of the Year.
Rodosky oversaw the 2V8 boat, which won the C Final at the NCAA Championships. The crew also took second at the ACC Championship Grand Final. The 2V8 helped the Blue Devils tie for first with No. 14 Indiana and No. 17 Notre Dame at the Dale England Cup as the 2V8 won both of its races.
“I'm thankful to be recognized by my peers in the coaching world,” Rodosky said. “Coaching this team has been a lot of hard work but also a lot of fun, which is important.”
Graham was the leading force of the V4, as it also captured the C Final at the NCAA Championships and took second at the ACC Championship Grand Final. The boat tallied the Blue Devils' lone win at the Pac-12 Challenge as it downed UCLA with a time of 7:21.5. The crew turned in a standout performance at the Dale England Cup with two victories.
“From the first day I stepped on Duke's campus, I knew we were going to accomplish great things within the rowing program,” Graham said. “Rowing is the most brutal sport in the world when you spend thousands of hours training for a six-to-seven minute race. So I have to give all of the credit to our student-athletes for putting the work in and never questioning if it was worth it. The highlight for me was seeing the team performance at the ACC Championships. Having all three NCAA boats be on the right side of a photo finish was incredible. We can't wait to get back to work preparing for the 2017 spring season.”
