SAO PAULO, Brazil – Behind the quickest goal in Olympic history along with solid defense, the Canada Women's National Team opened the 2016 Olympics by registering a 2-0 victory over Australia Wednesday afternoon at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Rebecca Quinn came in 23 minutes into the match and played the rest of the contest, finishing with 67 minutes played for Canada. A product of Toronto, Canada, Quinn saw action in her first Olympic match and helped preserve the shutout even though Canada were limited to only 10 players following a red card to starting defender Shelina Zadorsky in the 19th minute.
Canada opened the match with the quickest goal in Olympic history as Janine Beckie registered a goal off an assist from Christine Sinclair. Sinclair added the second goal in the 80th minute to secure the victory for Canada.
Next up for Canada will be Zimbabwe Saturday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m., on The Soccer Channel. Canada will close group play Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 3 p.m., versus Germany.
Canada is competing in its third consecutive Olympic games and is coming off claiming a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics in London.
If Canada were to advance through group action, the quarterfinals will take place Friday, Aug. 12, semifinals Tuesday, Aug. 16, bronze/gold medal matches Friday, Aug. 19.
