CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 14-time Tar Heel Invitational champion Duke women's golf team featured a strong start Friday in the first round by carding a five-under-par, 283, and holds a one stroke lead with 36 holes remaining at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devils rolled in 11 birdies over the first nine holes and had as high as a seven-under ledger when they made the turn. After dropping six shots early on the back nine, Duke finished strong with six birdies over the final six holes to regain the lead.
South Carolina (284) is one stroke behind, while Alabama (285), NC State (286), Arkansas (288), Louisville (288), North Carolina (289), Wake Forest (289), Ohio State (292) and Rollins College (296) rounded out the top 10 teams.
Senior Leona Maguire paced the Blue Devils with a three-under-par, 69, Friday and is three strokes off the individual lead. Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest and Molly Skapik of Louisville each turned in rounds of six-under-par, 66, to hold the individual lead.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, stuck her approach on the par five third hole to a foot and connected on her first birdie of the day on No. 3. She remained one-under through 10 holes, before getting an unlucky bounce off the fringe on the 388-yard, par four 11th and could not get up-and-down for par. Maguire responded by sinking a two-foot birdie on No. 13 and a 12-footer on No. 14 to get to two-under. After three straight pars, Maguire stuck her approach on No. 18 to three feet and sank her fourth birdie of the day to finish with her 25th career round in the 60s, which is sole possession of second on Duke's career charts.
Seeing action in her first Tar Heel Invitational, rookie Miranda Wang had the best start of the day for Duke with four birdies on the front nine and a three-under ledger. The native of Beijing, China drilled an 18-foot birdie on No. 1, six-footer on No. 3, short birdie on No. 6 and another long birdie on the ninth. Her short game was stellar on the front nine as she connected on three up-and-downs as well. After missing the green on No. 11 and No. 12, she could not get up-and-down and finished with back-to-back bogeys. Wang had a great approach on the 481-yard, par five 14th, but the ball spun back four feet. It didn't matter as she rolled in the nine-foot birdie to get back to two-under. She closed with four pars and a bogey on No. 15. Wang had a team-best 28 putts and missed only one fairway.
Junior Virginia Elena Carta was solid all day and held a two-under-par score through 14 holes. She placed her approach shots on No. 3 to one foot and No. 9 to two feet and sank both birdie putts. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, had a bogey on No. 15 and then three pars to finish the day tied 13th. She hit a team-best 17 greens on the day, but had a team-high 34 putts.
After opening her Duke career with back-to-back top 15 finishes, freshman Jaravee Boonchant turned in an even-par, 72, in round one and is tied 24th. She opened with an up-and-down par on No. 1 and then had a bogey on the second hole, but sank birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 to move into the red digits at 1-under. Bogeys on No. 11 and No. 13 dropped her back to one-over for the day, but rolled in a 23-foot putt on the par five 17th to get back to even for the day. Boonchant, a product of Bangkok, Thailand, hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts.
Sophomore Ana Belac suffered two consecutive bogeys to kick off her round, but went on to play her final 16 holes at one-under-par on her way to finishing with a one-over, 73. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, collected birdies on No. 7 (10 feet), No. 9 (12 feet) and No. 18 (five feet). Over the last eight holes, Belac was one-under-par and did not miss a green or fairway.
Duke will tee off Saturday in round two beginning at 10:39 a.m., along with South Carolina and Alabama.
