CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's golf team turned in the second-lowest 18-hole ledger in school history Saturday on its way to jumping out to 10-stroke lead in a talented field at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, which is being played at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Blue Devils shot an impressive 17-under-par, 271, Saturday and over 36 holes Duke owns a 22-under, 554, to take 10-stroke lead over Alabama (564) and South Carolina (565). Arkansas (567), NC State (572), North Carolina (572), Louisville (577), Ohio State (578), Wake Forest (578) and Michigan State (579) rounded out the top 10 teams.
Duke has turned in the top two 18-hole scores in school history this fall as the Blue Devils fired a 269 at the Jim West Challenge to open the season and a 271 Saturday in Chapel Hill. The 17-under score is the lowest in Duke history in relation to par. The previous was 16-under in the 2007 regional.
Four different Blue Devils finished in the red Saturday led by senior Leona Maguire with a six-under, 66. Both junior Virginia Elena Carta and freshman Jaravee Boonchant each signed for four-under-par, 68, and sophomore Ana Belac fired a three-under, 69.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, now holds a two stroke lead on the individual leaderboard with a nine-under-par, 135. Ainhoa Olarra of South Carolina (137), Maria Fassi of Arkansas (138) and Anna Redding of Virginia (138) head into the final round in striking distance.
A bogey-free, six birdie effort for Maguire in round two moved her into the lead. She collected three birdies on the front nine and three on the back as Maguire's was on fire Saturday. Maguire rolled in three birdies of over 10 feet (No. 4, No. 8 and No. 16). After a four-footer on No. 17 moved her to six-under for the day, Maguire found herself in the greenside bunker on 18, but rolled in a 20-footer to save par and finish with her 26th career round in the 60s. She finished with 29 putts, 17 greens and she hit all 14 fairways.
Carta, a product of Udine, Italy, carded a four-under, 68, Saturday on her way to posting her 10th career round in the 60s. She moved up to tied fifth overall with a five-under, 139. Carta opened play Saturday with five straight pars, before rolling in an eight-footer for birdie on No. 6 and a four-footer on No. 9 to get to two-under for the day. On the back, Carta placed her approach on the 388-yard, par four 11th to inches for birdie, but then had her first bogey of the day on No. 12. Carta responded with back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 and her sixth birdie of the day on No. 16 as she connected on a 15-footer. She hit 17 greens, 13 fairways and had 31 putts.
With five birdies on Saturday, Boonchant turned in a four-under, 68, to collect her third round in the 60s out of eight total rounds as a Blue Devil. She enters the final day tied 10th overall with a four-under, 140. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, opened the day with birdies on No. 1, No. 7 and No. 9 to make the turn at 3-under. She added birdies on No. 13 and No. 16 to get to five-under, but closed the day with her lone bogey on No. 18 to finish with a 68.
Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, also turned in a bogey-free round with birdies on No. 2, No. 11 and No. 14. She did not miss a green, while rolling in a 10-footer on the second hole, three-footer on 11 and Belac nearly had a hole-in-one on the 167-yard, par three 14th. Belac hit her five-iron to within two inches and connected the birdie. Over her last 26 holes, she has shot four-under-par with four birdies and no bogeys in Chapel Hill. Belac enters the final round tied 21st with a two-under, 142.
Freshman Miranda Wang posted a 75 in the second round, after shooting a one-under, 71, in round one. Wang, a native of Beijing, China, was one-under through eight holes with a birdie on No. 2. She got into trouble off the tee and ended up suffering a double-bogey on No. 9 and had bogeys on No. 13 and No. 18 to finish with a 75.
Duke will tee off Sunday beginning at 9:15 a.m., off tee No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 along with Alabama and South Carolina.
Maguire is looking for her ninth career victory and her second straight at the Tar Heel Invitational as she last won the tournament as a sophomore. She did not compete in the invite last year as she was playing in a professional event.
