DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke hits the road this weekend for the first of four straight ACC matches away from Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (11-8, 3-5 ACC) travel to Virginia (4-15, 0-8 ACC) for a 7 p.m., first serve Friday, Oct. 20 before taking on Virginia Tech (7-12, 1-7 ACC) at 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22 in Blacksburg, Va.

Duke and Virginia take the court for the 56th all-time meeting between the Blue Devils and the Cavaliers. Duke has won 20 of the past 21 meetings, including both ends of a 2016 home-and-home series. Duke topped the Cavaliers in five sets Sept. 24, 2016 before dispatching UVA, 3-0, Nov. 11, 2016 at home. Overall, Duke owns a 51-14 mark against Virginia all-time, including a 23-8 record in Charlottesville, Va.

Duke and Virginia Tech are set for the 33rd match in program history and 23rd as ACC opponents. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series, 28-4, including an 8-4 advantage in Blacksburg, Va. The two teams met twice in 2016. Duke won both contests, taking a 3-1 decision Oct. 9 in Durham and a straight-set victory Nov. 11 on the road.

SCHWANTZ' IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Freshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz has enjoyed a tremendous start to her collegiate career. The rookie from Frisco, Texas is second on the team in total kills (226) and kills per set (3.10) while hitting .253 on the year. Schwantz has recorded double-digit kills in 14 of Duke's 19 matches this season, including seven straight from Sept. 2-22. She was named ACC Freshman of the Week Sept. 11 after leading the Blue Devils to an undefeated weekend at the Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament and also earned all-tournament team honors for her efforts. STRONG BEGINNING FOR BATES
After battling injuries throughout her career, senior outside hitter Cadie Bates has been a key contributor to the 2017 Blue Devils, playing all six rotations. Through 19 matches, Bates leads the team with 232 kills, 83 higher than her previous career high (149) set in 2015. She totaled a career-best 20 kills in the season opener at Colorado State and is the only Blue Devil to reach 20 kills in a match this season. Bates has also been solid on defense and leads the Blue Devils with 10 double-doubles. She trails only libero Nicole Elattrache in total digs and digs per set this season while also leading Duke with 14 service aces.
BALANCED OFFENSE
Entering the weekend, Duke ranks fourth in assists per set (12.68) and fifth in kills per set (13.45) despite the fact Duke does not have a single player in the top 10 in hitting percentage, assists per set or kills per set. Setters Emma Paradiso, Sarah Nelson and Haley Seyfarth have run Duke's 6-2 system, featuring strong efforts from outside hitters Payton Schwantz and Cadie Bates as well as rightside hitter Samantha Amos. A 2016 All-ACC Freshman Team selection, Amos has six matches with 10 or more kills and six with a hitting percentage of .300 or better.
ELATTRACHE ANCHORS BACKLINE
Senior Nicole Elattrache has assumed the starting libero role and leads the Blue Devils with 297 digs. Elattrache currently ranks sixth in the ACC, averaging 4.06 digs per set. She earned Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament MVP honors after totaling a career-high 29 digs in Duke's win over Lehigh. For her career, Elattrache owns 984 digs and is 16 shy of becoming the 23rd Blue Devil in program history to reach 1,000 career digs.
NAGEL REACHES 600 WINS
Head coach Jolene Nagel earned her 600th career victory in Duke's straight-set victory over TCU Sept. 9 in Fort Worth, Texas. With the victory, Nagel became the 22nd active NCAA Division I head coach to reach 600 career wins and joined Florida State's Chris Poole and North Carolina's Joe Sagula as the only three ACC coaches to reach the milestone. For her coaching career, Nagel owns a 606-341 record with stints at Cornell, Georgetown and Duke. In her 19th season with the Blue Devils, Nagel owns a 403-201 record at Duke including a 243-103 mark in the ACC.
