STILLWATER, Okla. – With a short turnaround from Friday's opening day of the NCAA Championship, the fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team had the first tee time Saturday morning in the second round and carded its second straight 10-over-par, 298, and is eighth heading into Sunday's action at the 6,328-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
When Duke completed its round Saturday, the Blue Devils were tied 12th, but with a lot of golfers still on the course for the afternoon wave. The Blue Devils continued to edge up the scoreboard and finished eighth, when it was all said and done.
“Well we scored the same today as the first day,” commented Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “I don't think either day was really that far off. This is a windy, really good golf course and everybody is pitching, chipping, hitting bunker shots, having a lot of balls roll off the green and things like that. So it is easy to get frustrated and I have seen my team really handle it well and not get frustrated. We have to continue to do that.”
UCLA carded a nine-under, 279, in the second round and holds a five-stroke lead at three-under, 573, over Alabama (578). Rounding out the top six teams were Southern California (589), Arizona (592), Northwestern (592), Florida State (595), Kent State (595) and Duke (596). For the second straight day, Duke opened the first nine holes of play two-over, but closed the final nine at eight-over-par.
Following Sunday's third round, the top 15 teams will advance to Monday's final round of stroke play.
Beginning Monday, May 21, Golf Channel will provide extensive coverage of the championship from 4-8 p.m. (ET), featuring the final round of stroke play and awarding of the individual medalist honors.
Duke freshman Jaravee Boonchant turned in an even-par, 72, Saturday to pace the Blue Devils. She enters day three of her first championship tied 19th with a two-over, 146. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, carded three straight pars to open her morning, before suffering her first bogey on No. 13. She came back to collect back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th as she drained a six-foot and three-foot birdies. Boonchant missed the fairway on the 367-yard, par four 16th and had another bogey to fall back to even par.
“Today my approach shots were really good,” commented Boonchant. “For all my birdie putts, I hit it close to the pin and made the putts.”
The All-ACC selection had a great sand shot on No. 18 to four feet and connected on her third birdie of the day on the 482-yard, par five. After making the turn at one-under, Boonchant had bogeys on No. 1 and No. 3 to fall back to one-over-par. On the 397-yard, par four fifth, she had 160 yards into the green and she stuck her six-iron to two feet for birdie. Boonchant bogeyed No. 6, but came back to birdie the par five ninth as she drained a nine-footer. She tied a postseason best with 29 putts, while hitting nine fairways and 11 greens.
“I think for this course you need to be more conservative compared to the other courses we have played before,” said Boonchant. “It is really challenging, because if you miss the green by a little bit you could end up in a really bad position. If you are more careful around the green, you will be fine.”
“I am real proud of her,” said Brooks on the play of Boonchant. “I am proud of her for the whole year. To come in here on this golf course and do as well as she has – I have watched her probably a total of only about five holes in these two days. That usually means that I am counting on somebody and I have a lot of confidence in them. The parts that I saw, she thinks really well. I saw her make a great comeback putt to.”
Senior Leona Maguire signed for a 76 in round two, which was her second-highest 18-hole score in NCAA Championship play over her four years. A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire was solid over her first nine holes with seven pars a 10-foot birdie on No. 15 and a bogey on No. 16 to make the turn at even par. Over her final nine holes, she three-putted three straight holes, No. 3-5, to fall to three-over. Maguire added another bogey on No. 7 and just missed birdie on No. 9 to close her day. She is tied 30th with a four-over, 148, after hitting 14 fairways, 11 greens and totaling 31 putts.
With a two-over, 74, Saturday, sophomore Ana Belac is tied 36th with a 149. She kicked off her day with three pars and then hit her tee shot on the 391-yard, par four 13th left into the woods. Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, finished with a triple-bogey, seven, and went to three-over. She responded by playing the next 14 holes at one-under with birdies on No. 16 from three feet and No. 9 from seven feet. Belac hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 31 putts on day two.
Junior Virginia Elena Carta featured four bogeys over her first nine holes and made the turn at four-over, 40. Carta, who is from Udine, Italy, turned it around on the second nine with two birdies on No. 2 from 25-feet and No. 9 from 12 feet, two bogeys and five pars. She hit seven of nine greens and all fairways over her final nine holes to shoot even par. Carta hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and rolled 36 putts on the day.
With another excellent start to her round, senior Lisa Maguire was one-under through three holes Saturday. She hit the fairway bunker off the tee, but had a great shot to eight feet and connected for birdie on the 327-yard, par four 12th. Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, scrambled the rest of the way and finished with a 79. She hit eight fairways, 11 greens and rolled 32 putts.
Duke will tee off beginning at 9:36 a.m. (ET) off hole No. 1 along with Kent State and Stanford.
“I think that is what is going to make the difference,” commented Brooks on moving on past bad holes. “The team that can accept it, take it in stride, go onto the next shot, go on to the next hole. That is the team that is going to win.”
