NEW YORK, N.Y. – Following a successful showing in the pentathlon on Thursday, the Duke track & field program continued its streak Friday at the Armory Collegiate in New York, N.Y. As a team, the Blue Devils captured 10 first-place finishes.
Senior India Lowe got it done on the track once again as she broke her own personal-best time. Lowe clocked in a sixth-place finish of 7.52 in the prequalifying round of the 60m, good for the second-best time in school history. Lowe advanced to the finals and captured the same time, 7.52, to take eighth. This marks the third time this season Lowe has etched her name in the Duke record books.
The men's squad started off strong with a second-place finish in the distance medley relay. Charles Cooper, Carter Dillon, Miles Mingo and Matt Wisner clocked in at 9:41.88. Cooper was first on the track in the 1200m (2:57.5) followed by Mingo in the 400m (49.0), Dillon in the 800m (1:52.8) and Wisner in the 1600m (4:02.3). Dillon's time in the 800m is a personal-best while Wisner ran in just his second mile in his career and posted an eight-second personal-best time.
Cooper, Dillon and Wisner from the DMR will be joined by Alex Miley in the 4xmile relay. The Duke men were invited to compete on the national stage as two records are being challenged on Saturday. Two professional teams are taking aim at the world record of 16:14 while Villanova and Duke are set to challenge the collegiate record of 16:19. NBCSN will broadcast a portion of Saturday's meet, including the men's 4xmile which will be at 1:50 p.m.
Friday also featured several Blue Devils posting personal best scores, highlighted by Nikki Merritt's performance in the long jump and 60m hurdles. Merritt notched third in the long jump with a leap of 5.78m and 10th in the 60m hurdles in 8.69. Lauren Hoffman competed alongside Merritt in the hurdles and tied her personal best in 8.71 to take 11th.
For the second week in a row, Ben Beatty posted a personal-best mark in the shot put competition as he claimed sixth place with a 16.89m toss.
The women's vault squad closed out the evening for Duke with three of the four vaulters reaching season-best heights. Laura Marty placed second with a mark of 4.20m, which ranks third in the ACC, while Nati Sheppard (3.90) and Chesney Ward (3.75) went fifth and seventh, respectively.
Duke will close out its time in New York Saturday morning.
