NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Duke track & field team closed out a successful weekend at the Armory Invitational in New York, N.Y., Saturday. As a team, the Blue Devils secured 36 top-10 finishes in the competitive three-day meet.
The Duke women placed second out of 18 teams with 67.5 points.
“We had three days of competition in New York,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “The first day, we had great success in the pentathlon. Like other travelers across the United States, we had difficulty with flights on Thursday. Many of our athletes showed up to the meet early Friday morning and had to compete the same day. We had an amazing Friday considering that. Today, you could see some of our athletes were tired but we still had a lot of personal bests. It was a really good weekend for the men's 3k group and the women's team was successful in all areas. I'm proud of the entire team. Most of our athletes competed three weeks in a row and will take next weekend off while some members of the team will compete at the Camel City Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C.”
The men's distance squad set the tone early Saturday with all five Blue Devils running personal bests in the 3000m. Paul Dellinger posted a fourth-place finish in 8:15.45 just before CJ Ambrosio crossed the line fifth in 8:15.66. Dalton Randall (8:22.95), Cole Hoff (8:26.47) and Michael Ungvarsky (8:35.06) rounded out the distance performances for Duke.
Additionally, Charles Cooper, Carter Dillon, Alex Miley and Matt Wisner finished fourth in the 4xmile in 16:58.57 after Cooper, Dillon and Wisner helped Duke to a second-place finish Friday in the distance medley relay.
Senior Domonique Panton once again saw success in the triple jump and posted a second-place finish with a season-best mark of 12.67. Panton holds the school record of 12.72.
The Blue Devils also saw success in the 4x400m relay as Kelcie Simmons, India Lowe, Brittany Aveni and Lauren Hoffman clocked in at 3:41.03 to take second.
Lowe continued to be consistent this year as she placed sixth this afternoon in the 200m in a time of 24.27 while Kelcie Simmons clocked the same time to put her on Duke's all-time list at No. 5.
In addition to her duties on the 4x400m relay team, Aveni took the track to compete in the 800m and captured third in 2:08.66 while Nick Cox posted a personal-best time in the same event. Cox clocked in at 1:53.86 to notch 10th.
Ben Beatty continued to notch a personal-best toss in his events as he came in 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 16.69m. On Friday, Beatty captured a personal-best toss in the shot put competition.
Duke will return to action Feb. 1-2 at the Camel City Invite in Winston-Salem, N.C.
