Duke Earns Five Top-Five Finishes to Close Fall at Rivanna Romp

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke rowing team closed out the fall with a full day of competition Sunday at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Devils raced five varsity 8+ boats, five varsity 4+ boats and one freshmen 8+ boat, coming away with five top-five finishes across the team's final regatta of the fall.

"I think all the Duke boats raced really well today," head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. "Everyone did a really good job of stepping up. We had no prior fall races before today, so I think everyone came in and did their jobs really well. It was great to see our boats, especially our A boats, be so competitive against Virginia's A boats. It was only a few seconds separating places first through second. That was really good for our team."

The varsity 8+ boats kicked off the competition first Sunday, with Duke's top varsity 8+ boat notching a second-place finish with a time of 13:28.5. The Blue Devils' A boat of coxswain Tara Fagan, Lauren Sizemore, Reed Kenny, Sydney Johnson, Morgan Linsley, Megan Lee, Ella Harris, lelia Boley and Olivia Mendonca finished only behind the boat of host Virginia in the race.

The Blue Devils' B boat also earned a top-five spot, clocking a time of 13:47.8 to earn a fourth-place finish. Duke's C and D boats finished amongst the top 15 in the varisty 8+ race, with C placing 12^th with a time of 14:17.3 and D finishing 14^th with a time of 14:24.6. The Blue Devils' E boat closed out the competition for Duke with a 20^th place finish, recording a time of 15:27.3.

Duke also earned a pair of top-five finishes in the varsity 4+ competition, with the A and B boats finishing third and fourth, respectively. The A crew of coxswain Fagan, Boley, Kiernan Spencer and Mendonca clocked a time of 15:04.9, while the B boat finished right behind with a time of 15:13.6 in fourth place.

Duke's C boat notched a top-10 finish, registering a time of 15:31.9 to place eighth. Rounding out the varsity 4+ competition for the Blue Devils were the D boat, which finished 13^th with a time of 15:53.9, and the E boat, which clocked out at 16:58.2 to place 26^th.

The Blue Devils' lone freshmen crew secured a first-place finish to close out the day of competition, marking Duke's fifth top-five finish of the regatta. The boat of coxswain Ginger Del Real, Sizemore, Linsley, Lee, Caeley Tierney, Rachel McNutt, Rivca Chaver, Emilie Lijesen and Alice Elworthy recorded a time of 14:09.7 to secure the top spot in the race.

"The freshmen dominated their race," Cooke Carcagno added. "They just looked like they were having a great time doing it. They have been having a great year, and contributing to our entire varsity team all year."

Today's race at the Rivanna Romp marks the conclusion of the fall season for the Duke rowing squad. The Blue Devils will now turn their attention to the spring season, which kicks off on February 29, when Duke hosts Virginia on Lake Michie.
