Duke Set for NCAA Regionals

DURHAM, N.C. – With the conclusion of the 2019 ACC Fencing Championships, the sixth-ranked Duke fencing team will turn its attention to the postseason as they compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Saturday, March 9 in Easton, Pa.

A fencer's performance at regionals will have a direct impact on their chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships, as both their regular season resumé and placing at the regional meet will be considered when the field is selected next week.

FLASHBACK TO 2018

At last year's regional meet, 10 Blue Devils logged top-10 finishes in their respective weapons, highlighted by Brycen Rushing's second-place finish in men's foil. Eoin Gronningsater placed fifth in foil while Bryn Hammarberg notched sixth in epee, followed by Agoston Walter in ninth in saber.
On the women's side, Rhiannon Harvey notched fifth in foil while Julia Gianneschi (8th, foil), Lindsay Sapienza (8th, saber), Claudia Wrampelmeier (9th, epee) and Zuzu Tang (10th, foil) rounded out Duke's top performances.

LAST TIME OUT

The 2019 ACC Fencing Championships were highlighted by foilist Zoe Superville and epeeist Maria Papadopoulos garnering bronze medals in their respective weapons.
As a team, both the sixth-ranked men and women placed second overall behind top-ranked Notre Dame in the team standings.

SUPERB SABERISTS

Ping Ping Kitsiriboon leads the men's saber squad with 49 victories followed by Ben Stone with 41.
On the women's side, Sapienza not only leads the women's saber squad but the entire team with 55 wins.

FIERCE FOILISTS

Gianneschi and Harvey, who both posted top-10 finishes at regionals last year, lead the women's foil team with 49 and 48 wins, respectively. ACC bronze medalist Superville is right behind with 42.
Last year's regional podium finisher Rushing spearheads the men's contingent with 50 wins and followed closely behind is Gronningsater.

EXCEPTIONAL EPEEISTS

2017 All-American Hammarberg headlines the men's epeeists with 46 wins under his belt while Joe Choo and Amit Sarma own 39 and 36, respectively.
Freshman Ava Navarro owns 51 wins this season as a rookie followed by fellow rookie Huda Aldadah with 45.
