Need To Know
Team Two Against The Pirates...
This the second all-time meeting between the two squads and the first in Durham … ECU leads the series, 1-0, after picking up a 4-1 victory in the inaugural meeting last year in Greenville … Duke is 5-5 this year against teams from North Carolina … ECU enters Wednesday looking to get back on the winning track after going 2-8 in its last 10 games … The Pirates are 0-4 this year against the ACC.
Making It Raine...
Raine Wilson has been known to bring the power to the plate and could not have been more evident than in game two of the series against NC State. Wilson led off the inning with a solo home run to straightaway center before hitting a two-run jack to left to close out an eight-run second inning by the Blue Devils, the highest scoring inning in program history. Wilson became the first player in school history to record two home runs in the same inning with her performance and also became the first Blue Devil to crack 10 homers for her career.
Strikeouts On Strikeouts On Strikeouts...
Freshman Shelby Walters had a lights-out performance in the series opener against NC State on Friday, tossing 12 strikeouts against the Wolfpack. Her 12 K's tied the program single-game record, which was set last season by Peyton St. George against Morgan State on Feb. 23, 2018 in Orlando, Fla.
DJ On A Tear...
Freshman Deja Davis has been on fire from the plate over the last 10 games, pacing the Blue Devils with a scorching .531 clip. She also leads the team during that stretch with a .719 slugging average and .571 on-base percentage. Davis has posted 17 hits, eight runs, five RBI, two doubles and a pair of triples. The team-leader with 15 multi-hit performances this season, Davis has posted five multi-hit showings over the last 10 games, with three of those contests being three-hit games.
The rookie infielder has been a threat at the plate throughout the year as a whole, recording a team-leading .333 clip and 58 hits along with 30 runs, five triples, four doubles and a pair of homers. The rookie has recorded 12 multi-hit performances since March began and leads the team in that category with 15 this year. Davis put together a 4-for-4 showing against NC Central on Feb. 19, one of three four-hit performances in program history.
Keep Em Guessing...
It's been a year of changes when it comes to the lineup card for the Blue Devils. Through 51 games, they have turned in 35 different lineups by batting order and 19 different ones by position. Duke used a different batting order through the first 22 games of the season. The most games the same batting order has seen is five so far, while Duke has used the same lineup by position 13 times.
PSA: Do. Not. Run. On. Jazz...
Redshirt sophomore Jazmine Moreno has been second to none behind the plate this season for the Blue Devils, throwing out an ACC-leading 13 runners trying to steal, which also ties for the lead in the nation. Three times this season, Moreno has recorded a pair of RTO's, all career highs. Most recently, No. 30 threw out a pair of runners in Duke's series-opening win against Pitt (March 15).
St. George Shutting Batters Down...
Sophomore hurler Peyton St. George put on two masterful performances in the sweep of the Lancers on April 3. The righty went 2-0 behind a .072 ERA in 9.2 innings of work, tossing 10 strikeouts and scattering three hits while allowing just one run. She also held opposing batters to a .094 clip. St. George held the Lancers scoreless in eight of her 9.2 innings, only surrendering a first-inning home run in the second game of the day.
Before Virginia Tech's two runs in the top of the seventh of game two last week, St. George had held opponents scoreless for 15.1 consecutive innings, the longest such streak in school history.
Making Sacrifices...
For the second-straight season, the Blue Devils are one of the best in the ACC when it comes to dropping the sacrifice bunt. With 49 on the year, the squad leads the conference handedly, with the next closest team, Boston College, in the category tallying 30 this year. Three Blue Devils stand in the top 10 of the ACC in sac bunts, with Jazmine Moreno leading the way with 11. She is also tops in the ACC and 37th nationally with 0.22 sacrifice bunts per game.
Triple Trouble...
The Blue Devils have established themselves as one of the top squads in the nation when it comes to tallying triples. Through 51 games, Duke has accumulated 19, which stands second in the ACC and surpasses its 2018 total of nine. Duke's 0.37 triples per game average is second in the conference and eighth in the NCAA.
Jameson Kavel leads the Blue Devils with six triples so far. Kavel has cemented her status as the master of getting extra bases so far this season with a team-high 21 XBH. Kavel is second in the ACC and up to seventh nationally in triples, while coming in at second in the conference and 24th in the NCAA with a 0.12 triples per game average. Kavel's six also marks the program record for a single season, which she set last year.
Defensive Excellence...
Earlier this season, Duke put together one of its best defensive stretches in program history, not committing an error in five-straight games from March 2 against Mississippi State to March 6 at Elon. The stretch of five-game stretch is a program record, besting the four-straight contests from last year set through the first four games in the Citrus Classic (Feb. 23-24) in Orlando, Fla. For the year, the Blue Devils sport a .974 fielding percentage, which is second in the conference and up to 17th nationally.
The XBH Queen Holding Court...
One of the most consistent forces for the Blue Devil bats this year has been sophomore outfielder Jameson Kavel. Kavel, who owns a .301 average and leads the team with 30 runs scored, 21 extra-base hits, 14 doubles, six triples and a .479 slugging clip, became the third player in school history with a four-hit game in the Friday contest at Georgia Tech. The sophomore went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, two more driven in and a double.
It was a day of doubles for Kavel in Duke's extra-innings win against Kansas on March 2. The sophomore outfielder went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, with all three of her hits being for two bases. Her three doubles made her the first player in school history to record at least three in a game.
Go DJ, That's My DJ...
Deja Davis has been a stud on the base paths for Duke, going 23-for-24 in stolen bases, including three of 3-for-3 showings to set and then tie the school single-game record. Her 23 stolen bases surpass the program record of 16, set last year by Jameson Kavel, making her the first player in school history to record 20-plus steals in a single season.
Got The Need, The Need For Speed...
The Blue Devils have been a terror on the base paths for opposing teams so far this year. Duke has 66 stolen bases, 33 more than where they stood through the first 51 games of last season. Earlier this year, the Blue Devils tallied six steals against NC Central, which set the program single-game record. That mark had been previously set the game before with five against Penn State on Feb. 17. After recording just one game of at least four steals last year, Duke has five so far this season.
Late Lead = Major Key...
Holding the lead late is a major key to success for Marissa Young's squad over the first two years of the program. This year, the Blue Devils are 17-1 when leading after five and 18-3 when taking the lead into the seventh. In their two years, Duke is 41-3 when leading after six innings.
On the flip side, Duke has struggled when trailing late, going 2-19 when down after five and 1-19 when losing through six. In their win in the series opener against Pitt, the Blue Devils picked up their first win in history when entering the seventh trailing (1-39). Duke's loss to Elon on March 6 was its first defeat when leading entering the seventh in program history.
Just Keep Hitting, Just Keep Hitting...
Sophomore first baseman Rachel Abboud has two school records of her own after Duke's doubleheader sweep of Longwood three weeks ago. Abboud picked up hits in both contests to up her hit streak to nine-straight games, a program record. She also reached base safely for the 25th-straight contest, a school best.
