Duke Lacrosse All-American and Sport Trailblazer Gene Corrigan Passes
A four year letterwinner from 1948-51, Corrigan was one of Duke's earliest lacrosse All-Americans, garnering honorable mention recognition in both 1950 and 1951. He helped the Blue Devils to a 21-13 record in his four years, including a 6-1 mark his senior campaign. Corrigan was inducted into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991 for his excellence on the lacrosse field and his influence on the game and the college athletics landscape.
In 1997, he was the recipient of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Coaches Association Service Award for his lifetime of service, accomplishments, and contributions to the sport of lacrosse.
Upon graduating from Duke in 1952, Corrigan began his career teaching and coaching at St. Paul's School in Baltimore. He went on to serve as the lacrosse coach at Washington & Lee for three seasons, compiling a 16-15 record.
The Baltimore native then moved on to occupy almost every desk imaginable in athletics. He served as the lacrosse coach at Washington & Lee, the Sports Information Director and Director of Athletic Programs at Virginia and Athletic Director at Notre Dame before assuming the ACC post in 1987.
Corrigan is survived by his wife of 66 years Lena, children Louise (Scott Wawner), Kathryn (Tony Zentgraf); David (Jean), Kevin (Lis), Brian (Kathy), Timothy (Jackie) and Boo (Kristen), 19 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Game Week is Here
With two weeks of preseason practice in the books, game week has finally arrived. The Blue Devils are among 24 teams scheduled to open the year Feb. 1. This is the earliest Duke has opened a lacrosse season, beating last year's Feb. 2 start by one day.
Duke is 62-15 in the month of February and 37-14 under head coach
John Danowski. The Blue Devils are facing Air Force in the first game of the season for the third time, going 1-1 in the previous two meetings. Overall, Duke is 11-2 in season-openers under Danowski with setbacks to Denver in 2013 and Air Force in 2017.
Giles-Harris Wins More Preseason Praise

JT Giles-Harris earned more preseason praise this past week as he garnered a a spot on the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America First Team. The 2019 first-team All-American also was on Inside Lacrosse's short list of candidates for the Tewaaraton Award. He is the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year and is in the conversation as the best defenseman in the game this year.
Montgomery Gets a Nod
A third-team All-American in 2019, junior midfielder
Nakeie Montgomery earned an honorable mention nod on the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America squad. Montgomery ran on the first midfield for much of last season, compiling 21 goals and 18 assists for 39 points. In his two seasons, he has played 35 games, scoring 55 points from 35 goals and 20 assists. He will be looked to be a top scorer and distributor from the midfield this season.
Defending Home Turf
Koskinen Stadium has treated the Blue Devils well over the years, being the home to countless memorable moments. Everything from Coach Danowski's Division I record-breaking 375th victory and double overtime NCAA Tournament wins, Duke relishes winning on its home turf. Since 2007, Danowski teams are 113-22 at Koskinen, an 84-percent success rate. This year's group of seniors is 24-4 all-time in Durham.

Jake Caputo and future Duke players Brennan O'Neill and Jake Naso were among the 24 players selected to the trimmed down U.S. men's U19 training roster. The U19 squad is headed to Limerick, Ireland in July for the 2020 World Lacrosse U19 World Championship. These three have advanced throughout the tryout process that started with 104 players.
