Breaking Down the Blue Devils
- The Blue Devils play their sixth game of the abbreviated 2020 fall season Friday when they host Wake Forest Friday.
- Duke is 2-3-0 overall and 2-2 in ACC play with both wins coming against NC State. The Blue Devils are among four teams in the South Division with six points.
- Duke's seven goals have come from five different players as Jack Doran, Daniel Wright, Lewis McGarvey, Nick Pariano and Stephen O'Connell all have goals. Conor Kelly, Matthias Frick, Peter Stroud, Scotty Taylor and Pariano have assists.
- Pulisic, Matthias Frick and Ian Murphy are the veterans anchoring the defense. They have a combined 151 starts and have been and will be crucial in Duke's success this season. Rookie Antino Lopez, Amir Daley and Lewis McGarvey join the veteran crew. Frick, Murphy and McGarvey are the lone Blue Devils to play every minute this season.
- Twenty different Blue Devils have seen action this season, including nine of the 11 freshmen.
Â
Series History
- Duke and Wake Forest meet for the 47th time since the first game in 1980. The Blue Devils are 23-16-7 overall against the Demon Deacons, but Wake Forest has had the more recent success with a 3-0-2 record in the past five outings.
- Duke last defeated Wake Forest Sept. 23, 2011, a 4-1 win in Durham behind a brace from Andrew Wenger. The Demon Deacons are averaging three goals per game in the previous four matchups.
Â
Last Time Out
- Clemson's James Brighton scored 16 seconds into the second overtime to hand Duke a heart-breaking 2-1 loss last week at Historic Riggs Field. Brighton had both goals for the Tigers as Clemson escaped with the victory.
- "We definitely didn't deserve to lose and we certainly had two or three good chances to win the game so it's a bummer," said head coach John Kerr after the setback.
- Stephen O'Connell had the goal for the Blue Devils with Scotty Taylor providing the assist. The Blue Devils were excellent throughout the 100 minutes of action and were incredibly unlucky not to come away with the win in regulation. Duke outshot Clemson 10-8 in the 90 minutes and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks as it did well to force Clemson into mistakes and create dangerous counters.
Â
Last Time We Met
- Duke and Wake Forest last played in 2018 when the Blue Devils traveled to face the No. 1 Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem.
- Ciaran McKenna put Duke ahead 1-0 in the 41st minute, but the lead was short-live as Wake Forest answered 90 seconds later to equalize before the half.
- Wake Forest came out fast in the second half to add two more goals and take a 3-1 lead before a penalty kick from Daniele Proch pulled it within one in the 76th minute. The Deacons iced the victory with a fourth goal in the 81st minute.
Â
