DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke swimming and diving program hosted its final intrasquad meet of the preseason on Saturday morning at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion in Durham.
Â
The meet was a battle between the men's and women's team. After fierce competition, the women ultimately took the meet, 210-112.
Â
"We had a great week of training, one of our biggest weeks so far this preseason," associate head coach
Dawn Kane said. "We knew that going into the meet and wanted to see what we could do after a week of hard training. We were impressed and proud of everything they accomplished today."
Â
Scoring for the meet put emphasis on individual performances while competing as a team. Coordinated by associate head coach
Doak Finch, there were multiple opportunities to score, primarily based off reaching target times, NCAA qualifying times from last season, school records or career bests. For example, a career best time and reaching a target time earned six and two points, respectively.Â
Â
Throughout the meet, 57 target times were met and split 24-23 in favor of the women. In addition, a combined 52 swims earned a total of 152 points by being close to NCAA qualifying standard times.
Â
Five swimmers, three women and two men, broke unofficial career best times throughout the meet. Senior
Lucy Callard swam a 2:00.14 in the 200 butterfly to top her previous personal best. Freshmen
Emily Lenihan and
Sarah Foley also performed well with personal-best times of 1:56.55 and 2:11.07 in the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke, respectively. Lenihan and Foley's times would have been third and second in the program top 10 charts, respectively.
Â
On the men's side, junior
Matthew Whelan swam a career best in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 47.96. Freshman
Zach McIntyre touched at 20.35 in the 50 free for a personal best.
Â
Duke continues to prepare for the 2020-21 season as it awaits the announcement of its schedule.
