DURHAM, N.C. – After scoring the game-winning goal against third-ranked Clemson, rookie
Olivia Migli of the Duke women's soccer team has been selected the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week.
Migli, a product of Haymarket, Va., found the net at the 30:20 mark of the Sunday's match to notch her first career goal and help the now seventh-ranked Blue Devils earn their first conference win of the 2020 campaign. Before the goal, Duke was held scoreless for 278:20 minutes, dating back to the second half against Virginia on Sept. 17.
"We remember that first game-winning goal against Wake Forest and we were trying to get that feeling back," said Migli. "[The winless streak] definitely took a toll on us, but hopefully the funk is gone."
Migli has been a vital piece for head coach
Robbie Church and the Blue Devils this season, playing in all five matches to start her freshman campaign. So far, she ranks second on the team in shots (7) and shots on goal (4), while also ranking fourth in points (2).
The game-winning goal will be critical for Migli's morale going forward.
"It's my first goal in a college game, so I think it just helps with confidence and just giving you that feeling that you can play well and do well here in the ACC," added Migli. "It's obviously a great league so I think it just helped with confidence a lot."
Migli enjoyed a decorated prep career in which she was tabbed the No. 26 prospect in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer, while being listed as the third-ranked player in the Mid-Atlantic Region and the eighth-best defender in the country.
Duke will continue the 2020 campaign as it welcomes Virginia Tech to Koskinen Stadium Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
