CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Duke swimming and diving closed out its first day of competition on Thursday night at the UNC Janis Hape Dowd Invitational at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill.
 
Throughout the course of the day, 30 Blue Devils recorded a total of 50 career-best times including seven times that places in the top-10 charts of Duke history.
 
After a stellar morning, Duke saw 45 entries in the finals during the evening session highlighted by seven 'A' Final appearances.
 
Duke's best event of the day was the 200 individual medley as three Blue Devils appeared in the 'A' Finals. Freshman 
Sarah Foley and sophomore 
Kayle Park both earned berths into the top final after placing second and seventh, respectively, in the preliminaries. Foley's time of 1:57.44 in the preliminaries and Park's 2:00.38 in the finals both earned spots in the program's top-10 list at second and ninth, respectively. Foley finished with a team-high 14 points on the day.
 
Junior 
Cole Reznick earned Duke's best single finish of the day by taking the top spot of the 200 individual medley preliminaries before placing second in the event with a career-best time of 1:45.70. His time was the third-fastest in Duke history. Reznick led the Blue Devils with 17 points.
 
Freshman 
Catherine Purnell led the Blue Devils in the 500 freestyle, earning a spot in the 'A' Final after touching the wall in 4:49.54 in the preliminaries. Her time placed 10th in program history. She placed eighth in the evening finals. Fellow classmate 
Emily Gjertsen finished second in the 'B' Final with a career-best 4:50.00.
 
On the men's side, sophomore 
Chris Dalla Valle swam a career-best 4:26.06 in the 500 freestyle to secure a berth into the top final in the evening. His time also placed eighth in the all-time Duke charts. Junior 
David Hallaron found success in the evening with a third-place finish (4:26.97) in the 'B' Final.
 
Freshmen 
Emily Lenihan and 
Aleyna Ozkan both recorded career-best times in the 100 butterfly as they finished ninth (54.00) and 12th (54.61), respectively. Lenihan's time placed 10th in program lore.
 
Sophomore 
Charlie Gingrich swam a 47.25, the fourth-fastest time in Duke history, in the preliminaries to reach the 100 butterfly finals on the men's side. In the 'B' Final, junior 
Matthew Whelan placed second (47.86), freshman 
Luke Johnson placed fourth with a career-best 48.07 and Gingrich finished fifth.
 
In the 50 freestyle, junior 
Shayna Hollander placed sixth (22.80) in the 'A' Final. Freshman 
Sarah Snyder and senior 
Quinn Scannell placed 11th and 12th in the event with times of 22.97 and 23.13, respectively. Gingrich also made a top finals appearance by swimming a 20.11 in the preliminaries.
 
Duke closed the meet with a program top-10 time in the men's 400 medley relay. Duke's quartet of 
David Chang, Reznick, Gingrich and 
Zach McIntyre clocked a 3:12.62 mark to record the 10th fastest time in school history.
 
Duke returns to the pool tomorrow as the UNC Janis Hape Dowd Invitational continues. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals in the evening at 6 p.m. Tomorrow morning includes the 400 individual medley, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
