BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke men's and women's cross country teams both took second place in their respective races at the season-opening Virginia Tech Invitational Friday night in Blacksburg, Va.
NC State claimed the top spot in the women's 6k race with 15 points, followed by Duke with 48 and Virginia Tech with 79. In the men's 8k, the Wolfpack came out on top with 19 points, while the Blue Devils (51) finished second and the Hokies (58) took third.
Leading the way for the Duke women was senior
Michaela Reinhart, whose time of 21:03.4 was good for a sixth-overall finish. Senior
Amanda Beach and sophomore
Samantha Schadler finished ninth and 10th overall, respectively, with Beach coming in at 21:20.0 and Schadler clocking a personal-record time of 21:27.3. Beach's ninth-place result marks her highest finish among the field in a 6k race in her Duke career.
Senior
Helen Williams finished fourth among Blue Devil runners and 14th overall with a time of 21:52.7. She was followed by freshman
Charlotte Tomkinson, who clocked 21:57.3 in her collegiate debut for a 15th-place result. Fellow newcomer
Victoria Patterson was the next to finish for Duke, crossing the line in 19th place with a 22.04.9 mark.
Two other Duke women set personal records during the meet, as sophomore
Caroline Howley (22:49.0) and junior
Rylee Bowen (23:51.9) both bested their previous PR's by over 10 seconds.
In the men's 8k race that followed, senior and team captain
CJ Ambrosio paced the team with a sixth-place time of 25:05.0. He was trailed by sophomore
Zach Kinne, who crossed the finish line in ninth place at 25:10.4 for his best finish in an 8k competition as a Blue Devil. Duke would then take finishes 11-13, as senior
Paul Dellinger (25:14.8), senior
Alex Miley (25:16.7) and sophomore
Rory Cavan (25:17.0) rounded out the top five runners on the men's squad.
Making their collegiate debut for the men were
Jared Kreis (15th, 25:18.9),
Austin Gabay (21st, 25:41.2) and
Jack Kovach (35th, 26:46.7).
Duke will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when the men's and women's teams compete at the NC State Invitational at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Further information on the meet, including start times and distances, will be announced at a later date.
