DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team is set to kick off the 2021 spring slate Thursday as it welcomes Charlotte to Durham for a 2 p.m., match in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Thursday marks the first meeting between the Blue Devils and the 49ers. The shortened spring season from a year ago still created highlights for the Charlotte program, as it was 11-6 when it was halted in March due to the pandemic. The 49ers picked up a win over No. 49 Appalachian State, the highest-ranked opponent defeated in school history.
Charlotte had a four-match win streak and earned the largest triumph in school history against College of Charleston, defeating the Cougars 6-1. Seven of the 11 victories were shut outs and the 49ers earned the doubles point 11 times.
Prior to the start of the 2021 slate, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its preseason rankings for the spring and Duke was well represented with six Blue Devils making the singles, doubles and newcomers list.
Headlining the Blue Devils in singles is No. 8
Kelly Chen, followed by No. 28
Georgia Drummy, No. 29
Chloe Beck, No. 44
Margaryta Bilokin, No. T95
Karolina Berankova and No. 111
Meible Chi.
On the doubles side, Beck and Chen are tied for 34th while Drummy and Berankova check in at No. 56.
Additionally, the ITA released its list of top 10 newcomers as Berankova is No. 6.
Most recently, the Blue Devils wrapped up hosting the Duke Winter Classic where players competed as individuals against NC State and Tennessee. Beck turned in a 2-0 performance in singles while Bilokin, Chen and Chi all went 2-1. In doubles, Beck and Berankova posted a 3-1 weekend.
The full 2021 spring schedule will be released at a later date.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, Duke University will begin its spring sport program seasons without spectators at home events. Contests played on Duke's campus will include essential game management personnel and broadcast media. Traditional parking lots used by fans on game day will be closed.
