PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – Boosted by a hole-in-one from freshman
Jimmy Zheng, the No. 25 Duke men's golf team posted its third consecutive under-par round to record a fourth-place finish against a 10-team field at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational on Tuesday.
The Blue Devils were three-under for the final round, and posted a 54-hole team score of 10-under 854, paced senior
Evan Katz and freshman
Ian Siebers, who each finished tied for ninth at two-under 214. Duke had four in the top 20 as senior
Adrien Pendaries was tied for 15th at one-under 215 and Zheng 19th at even-par 216.
The tournament was the first action of the season for the Blue Devils, who had not competed since last March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Obviously we would like to win every tournament, but the season is a marathon, not a sprint," said Katz. "This was a great opening tournament to get our competitive legs under us to start the year. We saw a lot of positives as a team, and we saw the things we will build on going forward. We have a strong and talented team this year and I am very excited for the year ahead."
The host Seminoles (842, -22) rallied with a 10-under score on Tuesday to tie No. 17 Wake Forest (842, -22) for the team title. Clemson (845, -19) was third, with the Blue Devils (854, -10) in fourth as the only teams to finish in red figures.
Clemson's Jacob Bridgeman (-15) went wire-to-wire to win individual medalist honors by five strokes.
Katz carded a two-under 70 in the final round for the Blue Devils, posting four birdies on the day, to finish the tournament in a tie for ninth at two-under. Siebers posted three consecutive rounds of ever-par or better, including his final round 71 to post a two-under score. Pendaries' final round also included three birdies as the senior finished the tournament at one-under par.
Zheng's five-iron on the 178-yard par-3 14th hole was the highlight of the tournament as the freshman from New Zealand posted the fifth hole-in-one by a Blue Devil in NCAA-sanctioned events and the first since 2016. His ace put him three-under for the day and Zheng finished with his third-consecutive round of 72.
Duke's last hole-in-one came from
Alex Matlari at the Bulls Bay GC in 2016, with
Max Greyserman doing so on the same course two years earlier.
Julian Suri in 2009 and Adam Sumrall in 2012 have Duke's other two holes-in-one.
Graduate student
Steven DiLisio finished tied for 51st (228, +12) and senior
Qi wen Wong was 55th (230, +14) as he carded a one-under 71 on Tuesday.
Duke returns to action February 1-2 when it competes in the Sea Best Invitational at Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.
